Chapter 10

The original plan had not begun with theft.

It began with debt.

Two years earlier, Preston’s private lending business nearly collapsed after three jewelry clients defaulted within the same quarter.

If the company failed, several family-connected jewelers would fail with it.

Preston had personally guaranteed part of the lending facility.

Diane learned about it.

She decided the crisis could be temporary.

One valuable gemstone could secure refinancing.

Then another.

They removed stones from Caradonna pieces during restoration, replaced them with slightly lower-value stones, and used the originals as collateral.

Their intention, Diane claimed, was to reverse every swap after borrowers recovered.

Some did.

One did not.

Then the collateral system became necessary to cover the previous collateral system.

Three earlier clues changed meaning at once.

Preston’s insurance increases were not preparation for fake theft claims.

He was trying to keep coverage aligned with values the pieces were still supposed to have, hiding the substitutions.

Diane’s warehouse was not primarily a secret resale center.

It was the midpoint where original stones moved into private collateral files without appearing directly connected to Caradonna restorations.

And the professional replica brooch had not originally been made for Sophie.

It had been commissioned a year earlier as a practice piece so Preston could test whether restoration paperwork and photography could conceal a swap.

The night of the exhibition, they faced a new crisis.

The outside laboratory was arriving the next morning to conduct detailed certification on several collection pieces.

One would reveal an earlier substitution.

Preston needed access to a transport box before the stones left.

Diane proposed creating a public disturbance.

Plant the replica on Sophie.

Accuse her.

Cause Isabella to remove the child and shut down the reception.

In the confusion, Preston would exchange one stone from the transport box with the correct original that Diane had managed to recover.

No loss that night.

No new theft.

A desperate attempt to conceal the old one.

That was why the transport seal had been cut.

That was why nothing appeared missing.

That was why Preston panicked when Claire scanned the brooch immediately instead of accepting Diane’s accusation.

The distraction collapsed before he could complete the exchange.

Isabella stared at her cousin.

“You used my daughter to cover a financial scheme.”

Diane’s eyes filled.

“I thought she’d cry. You’d take her upstairs. Everyone would clear out.”

“You shoved her.”

Diane looked away.

“I lost control.”

“No.”

Isabella’s voice remained quiet.

“You planned to humiliate a three-year-old. You only lost control of how far you went.”

Preston leaned forward.

“You don’t understand what would’ve happened if the lending company collapsed.”

Isabella looked at him.

“You’re right.”

She stood.

May you like

“I understand what happened because you refused to let it collapse.”

And now she had to choose whether protecting innocent employees justified hiding crimes committed in their name.
