Chapter 13

Rachel separated the consequences into categories.

Family boundaries.

Corporate governance.

Civil recovery.

Insurance disclosure.

Possible criminal exposure.

No single meeting could resolve all of them.

The insurer received the complete audit.

Affected clients were notified privately according to counsel’s advice.

The family company offered independent reappraisal of every piece that had passed through the compromised restoration chain.

Preston resigned from all operational roles.

Not “temporarily.”

Permanently.

His lending company entered restructuring.

Diane agreed to place a Manhattan investment property into a repayment arrangement to cover part of the unrecovered stone and audit costs.

That would not make every loss disappear immediately.

But it made repayment real.

Claire supervised a new chain-of-custody system with independent verification at each restoration handoff.

No family member could approve both outbound and inbound inventory.

Isabella accepted that the rule applied to her too.

The strongest evidence came together without drama.

Workshop invoice for the replica.

Warehouse access logs.

Collateral files.

Restoration records.

Bank transfers.

The cut transport seal.

And Diane’s written cooperation statement prepared through counsel.

One issue remained.

The exhibition assault.

Preston’s initial swing had witnesses.

Isabella’s counterpunch was treated as defensive.

Diane’s attempt to drag Sophie away also had witnesses.

But Isabella’s slap occurred after she had already removed Diane’s hand.

Rachel looked at her.

“You’ve spent weeks demanding that they stop explaining wrongdoing with context.”

Isabella knew where this was going.

“So I don’t.”

She gave a full statement.

No deletion.

No pressure on guests.

No attempt to make the gallery footage disappear.

Diane heard about it through her attorney.

She called Isabella for the first time in weeks.

“You’re really admitting you hit me?”

“Yes.”

“You could say you were protecting Sophie.”

“I was protecting Sophie when I removed your hand.”

Diane went quiet.

The distinction mattered.

Then she asked:

“Are you going to keep Sophie from me forever?”

Isabella looked through the glass wall toward her daughter playing with blocks in Rachel’s waiting room.

“I don’t know about forever.”

“That’s something.”

“No.”

Isabella’s voice stayed level.

“It means you don’t get to decide yet.”
