Chapter 2

The sheer violence of Valeria’s actions sent a shockwave through the gathered Mafia elites. The clinking of crystal glasses ceased entirely. The polite conversation was severed as if by a guillotine.

Across the room, standing near the grand fireplace, nine-year-old Julian Castellano watched the scene unfold. Dressed in formal family-party clothing, Valeria’s son puffed out his chest, mimicking his mother's arrogant stance, clearly briefed on the coup that was unfolding.

Rafael Castellano had been seated at the head of the table the entire time. He did not yell. He did not jump up in a frantic panic. The veteran Mafia boss slowly, deliberately pushed his chair back. He rose to his full, towering height, a monument of terrifying, lethal control.

He walked around the corner of the heavy mahogany table. His polished leather shoes made no sound against the carpet. He reached his daughter and gently, with a tenderness that completely contradicted the monster he was known to be, knelt beside the weeping five-year-old.

"I've got you, principessa. Daddy is right here," Rafael murmured, his deep, slightly raspy voice abandoning its usual menace, shifting into a frantic, incredibly tender whisper.

He picked up the medical brace from the chair. With practiced, urgent precision, he securely placed the brace back around Amelia’s leg, ensuring the straps were perfectly tight to support her weight.

"Daddy…" Amelia sobbed, burying her tear-stained, rosy face into his neck, her small hands clutching the lapels of his tailored suit. She was shaking violently, her eyes darting across the room to where her grandmother sat. "Daddy… Grandma says Julian gets everything. She said I don't belong here."

The words hung in the bright, cinematic air, a toxic, horrifying confession of absolute betrayal.

At the opposite end of the table, Beatrice Castellano sat perfectly still. At sixty-seven, the Mafia-family matriarch was a portrait of cold, aristocratic entitlement. She wore an elegant formal gown, her fair skin adorned with heavy pearl jewelry and glittering rings.

Beatrice did not deny the child’s accusation. Instead, she calmly lifted a thick, sealed succession folder from her lap. With a slow, deliberate push, she slid the heavy folder across the polished mahogany table directly toward Rafael. As it stopped near his place setting, the flap opened slightly. Documents explicitly naming Julian Castellano as the sole beneficiary and heir to the empire became clearly visible.

There was no dialogue. The entire room held its breath, witnessing the exact moment the matriarch formally declared a rebellion against the most feared man in the city.
