Chapter 3

The bright, cinematic sunlight pouring through the windows seemed to sharpen, highlighting the absolute, terrifying stillness of Rafael Castellano. He did not look at the succession folder resting on the table. He kept Amelia safely tucked against his chest, shielding her entirely from the toxic ambition of his family.
Valeria, emboldened by her mother’s silent decree and entirely misunderstanding the lethal danger she was in, stepped forward. She crossed her arms, her diamond bracelet flashing in the light.
"Julian is a healthy, strong boy, Rafael," Valeria sneered, her American accent dripping with unwarranted arrogance. "He understands the business. He can carry the Castellano name. Your daughter is a liability. The capos will not follow a crippled girl."
"Valeria, shut your mouth," a senior capo whispered frantically from across the table, his fair face slick with nervous sweat. "Don't say another word."
"I will not be silenced!" Valeria snapped, her rosy cheeks flushing with aggressive pride. "My son is the rightful heir! The documents are drawn. The elders have agreed. You need to step aside, Rafael, before you fracture the entire syndicate over a weak child!"
Rafael slowly stood up, bringing Amelia with him. He handed his weeping daughter to a trusted, pale-faced nanny who had rushed forward from the periphery of the room.
"Take her to my private suite," Rafael instructed softly. "Lock the door."
"Yes, Mr. Castellano," the nanny whispered, hurrying the child out of the dining hall.
Once his bloodline was safely removed from the room, the protective father vanished entirely. The veteran Mafia Don stepped forward, towering over his older sister. The loose strands of dark hair falling over his forehead gave him an almost philosophical appearance, entirely at odds with the violent reality of the room.
He didn't speak. He didn't argue the legality of the documents.
Rafael drew his right hand back and delivered one brutal, thunderous open-handed slap directly across Valeria’s face.
The sound cracked through the dining hall like a rifle shot. The immense kinetic force of the blow was staggering. Valeria’s head snapped violently sideways, the impact completely short-circuiting her arrogant bravado.
Valeria staggered violently backward, her high heels scrambling uselessly against the plush carpet. She flew backward across the room, completely out of control, and crashed directly into the towering birthday cake table positioned near the wall.

The heavy table buckled instantly under her weight. Valeria crashed heavily among the fallen decorations, crushing the massive, multi-tiered cake beneath her. She hit the floor with a heavy, wet thud and did not move, her fair face already swelling with a brutal, dark bruise.
There was no dialogue. The bodyguards standing along the perimeter of the room did not move a muscle. They remained perfectly still, their hands resting near their concealed weapons, entirely loyal to the man who had just dismantled the upstart sister.
