Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE WALL

Dante did not chase Vanessa immediately.

He sent men to every gate.

No cars were allowed to leave.

No private driver received permission to move.

Then he carried Lily out of the hidden room himself.

She kept looking over his shoulder.

“Mommy coming?”

Dante could not lie.

“I’m going to find her.”

Lily touched his cheek.

“She’s scared of you.”

That hurt more than the message carved into the wall.

“Why?”

Lily shrugged the way only a child could.

“Grandma says Daddy gets angry.”

Dante looked toward the house.

Vanessa had raised him on anger.

Control.

Silence.

A Moretti never begged.

A Moretti never showed fear.

A Moretti solved problems before anyone else could use them.

Dante had spent years believing he had become different from the men before him.

Now his wife had hidden from him behind a wall on his own estate.

He needed to know why.

Vanessa was found in her bedroom.

Not escaping.

Burning something in the fireplace.

Dante entered without knocking.

One of his bodyguards kicked the burning papers apart before they were destroyed completely.

Vanessa turned.

Her face hardened.

“You have no right to storm into my room like a criminal.”

Dante held up Elena’s wedding ring.

Vanessa stopped speaking.

“Where is my wife?”

“I don’t know.”

“Wrong answer.”

“I protected you.”

Dante went still.

Vanessa seemed to realize she had said too much.

He stepped closer.

“From Elena?”

Vanessa looked toward the fire.

“From what she believed.”

“What did she believe?”

No answer.

Dante picked up one half-burned object from beside the fireplace.

Not a document.

A photograph.

Elena stood beside her older brother, Owen Hayes.

Owen had worked for the Moretti family as a driver and security coordinator.

He had died ten months earlier.

The family story was that he was killed during a confrontation with men connected to a rival crew.

Elena disappeared one month later.

Dante had attended Owen’s funeral.

He had held Elena while she cried.

Then she vanished.

On the back of the scorched photograph, someone had written one sentence.

ASK DANTE WHY HE ORDERED OWEN TO THE WAREHOUSE.

Dante stared.

He had never ordered Owen anywhere that night.

Vanessa watched him.

Now he understood.

“You told Elena I killed her brother.”

“I told her what I was told.”

“By who?”

Vanessa’s silence answered.

Dante turned toward the door.

“Bring Gabriel.”

Vanessa snapped.

“No.”

Dante stopped.

Gabriel Cross had commanded Dante’s personal bodyguards for twelve years.

He was not in the room.

He was supposed to be.

Dante looked toward the two guards beside the door.

“Where is he?”

Neither knew.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Dante, listen to me.”

“Did Gabriel tell Elena I ordered Owen to that warehouse?”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“He showed her enough to make her believe it.”

Dante turned back.

“And you let him.”

“I needed her away from you.”

“Why?”

Vanessa’s voice rose.

“Because she was taking you away from everything.”

The words came out with the force of something held too long.

“She wanted you out of the family meetings.”

“She wanted Lily raised away from guards.”

“She wanted you to sell the old house.”

“She wanted you to stop being a Moretti.”

Dante stared at his mother.

“No.”

His voice dropped.

“She wanted me to stop living like fear was a family business.”

Vanessa flinched.

Then Dante asked again.

“Where is Elena?”

“I don’t know.”

This time he believed she did not know where Elena was now.

But she knew where she had been.

Dante ordered every room around the greenhouse searched.

One hour later a guard found another hidden exit beneath the old gardener’s cottage.

Fresh tire tracks led from it.

Someone had moved Elena before Dante opened the room.

That meant Vanessa was not working alone.

Gabriel remained missing.

Then Lily remembered something.

She sat on Dante’s desk wearing the new shoes while he questioned the guards.

“Daddy?”

He turned.

“The tall man came today.”

“What tall man?”

She raised both hands beside her face like she was describing a giant.

“The one with the cut.”

Dante’s attention sharpened.

Gabriel had a thin scar running from his left ear to his jaw.

“What did he do?”

“He told Mommy hurry.”

Dante walked closer.

“Was Mommy scared of him?”

Lily nodded.

“He made Mommy cry.”

Dante felt the room darken around him.

“What did Mommy say?”

Lily looked down at her shoes.

“She said, ‘You already killed Owen.’”

Every guard in the room went still.

Dante looked toward the empty position where Gabriel had stood beside him for twelve years.

His most trusted man had not simply helped Vanessa hide Elena.

Elena believed Gabriel killed her brother.

Then one of the estate phones rang.

A guard answered.

His expression changed.

“Boss.”

Dante took the receiver.

No one spoke for three seconds.

Then Gabriel’s calm voice came through.

“If you want Elena alive, stop asking your mother questions.”

Dante’s face became cold.

“Where is she?”

Gabriel laughed quietly.

“You still think this started with your wife.”

A pause.

May you like

“It started the night your father tried to leave this family.”

The line went dead.
