Chapter 5 - THE MAN VANESSA COULD NOT SAVE

Vanessa sat down.

Not gracefully.

Her knees seemed to stop working.

Dante looked at her.

“You were there.”

She did not deny it.

The farmhouse kitchen became painfully quiet.

Even Lily sensed it.

She climbed into Elena’s lap and held her new shoe against her chest.

Dante waited.

Vanessa finally spoke.

She followed Carlo that night.

Not because she wanted him dead.

Because she intended to stop him herself.

Raymond’s men arrived first.

Thomas Cross arrived with Carlo.

The argument became chaotic.

Carlo saw Vanessa.

He realized she had betrayed his plan.

He told her to go home.

She refused.

Then Raymond’s men tried to force Carlo into a car.

Thomas pulled a gun.

Carlo stepped between them.

Thomas fired.

The bullet hit Carlo.

Everyone froze.

Vanessa ran to her husband.

He was still alive.

Dante’s face tightened.

“How long?”

“Minutes.”

“What did he say?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Your name.”

Dante’s breath changed.

Carlo asked whether Dante knew about the escape plan.

Vanessa said no.

Then Carlo told her:

“Good. Let him choose for himself.”

Dante looked away.

His father’s final wish had been the exact thing Vanessa refused to give him.

Choice.

Vanessa continued.

Thomas panicked after the shooting.

Raymond wanted him dead.

Carlo stopped them.

Even dying, he refused another death.

Thomas escaped.

Vanessa made a decision.

She helped Raymond create the rival-attack story.

Not because she feared prison or money.

Because she could not admit Carlo died while trying to leave her version of the family.

Dante’s voice became quiet.

“So you turned his death into a warning.”

Vanessa cried harder.

“Yes.”

For twenty-four years Dante had believed his father’s death proved that leaving the Moretti world made a man vulnerable.

In reality, Carlo died trying to give his son another option.

Gabriel watched Dante understand.

“My father never recovered from that night.”

Thomas Cross drank.

Became violent.

Told Gabriel different versions.

Sometimes Carlo attacked first.

Sometimes Raymond did.

Sometimes Vanessa caused everything.

But one truth remained.

Gabriel grew up believing the Morettis destroyed his father and then turned Carlo into a family martyr.

When Thomas died, Gabriel joined the Moretti security network.

At first he wanted truth.

Then power felt better.

He discovered how easily Vanessa could be controlled through guilt.

Every time he hinted he might expose Carlo’s death, she gave him access.

Trust.

Influence.

Silence.

Eventually Gabriel stopped wanting justice.

He wanted to become the man Dante depended on most.

Owen saw it.

That was why he died.

Elena looked at Gabriel with disgust.

“You became everything you said you hated.”

Gabriel’s face hardened.

Dante noticed.

A weakness.

Gabriel could explain murder as revenge.

He could not tolerate being compared to the Morettis.

Then footsteps sounded outside.

Gabriel turned sharply.

Dante’s bodyguards had reached the property.

Gabriel grabbed Lily from Elena’s lap.

Everything exploded at once.

Elena screamed.

Dante moved forward.

Gabriel pressed the gun near Lily’s side.

“Stop.”

Dante stopped.

Vanessa stood.

“Take me.”

Gabriel laughed.

“You think this is still about you?”

Vanessa moved closer.

“It should be.”

For once, no command.

No defense.

No pride.

“If somebody has to pay for what happened to your father, take me.”

Dante looked at her.

Elena did too.

Gabriel seemed almost offended.

“I don’t want you dead.”

Vanessa stared.

“Then what?”

“I want him to become what you made him.”

Gabriel looked toward Dante.

“I want Dante Moretti to kill me in front of his daughter.”

The room went still.

Gabriel smiled.

“Then every story about this family stays true.”

Dante understood.

This was not only leverage.

It was a test.

Gabriel wanted Lily to watch her father become the thing Carlo had tried to escape.

Dante slowly lowered his hands.

“No.”

Gabriel frowned.

Dante continued.

“You don’t get to choose what my daughter learns from me.”

Then Elena moved.

She threw the heavy ceramic water pitcher directly into Gabriel’s gun hand.

The pistol fired into the ceiling.

Lily dropped.

Dante caught her.

Bodyguards crashed through the doors.

Gabriel disappeared through the rear hallway before they reached him.

Dante handed Lily to Elena.

Then one of his men shouted from outside.

Gabriel had taken a motorcycle hidden behind the barn.

He was gone.

But he left something behind.

On the farmhouse table sat an old photograph.

Carlo Moretti.

Thomas Cross.

And a third man.

Dante stared.

The third man was Raymond Moretti.

His uncle.

Still alive.

Still attending every Moretti family dinner.
