Chapter 12

Rowena apologized to Milo in writing.
I did not deliver it immediately.
I asked him first.
“There’s a letter from the woman who asked Verena to move Mommy’s things.”
He frowned.
“Old lady?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She wants to say sorry.”
He thought.
“Read.”
Permission.
Rowena wrote simply.
I wanted something that belonged in your mother’s old boxes. I should have asked your father instead of helping move things that were important to you.
Good.
No adult detail.
Then:
I am sorry your mother’s urn was moved.
Milo listened.
Then asked:
“Did she find thing?”
“Yes.”
“Good?”
“Yes.”
He thought.
“Still bad move.”
Exactly.
Two truths.
He did not answer.
No need.
Rowena accepted that.
She and I never became friends.
We spoke twice afterward.
Enough.
Her name was corrected within Evelyn’s family.
No public announcement.

No grand vindication banquet.
