Chapter 17

Ten years after the engagement reception, Milo was sixteen.

The conservatory had been renovated.

Same flower table.

Different urn.

The original cracked accidentally during cleaning years earlier.

Milo chose the replacement.

Plain ceramic.

No ceremony.

One afternoon, he found me there.

“You talking to Mom?”

“No.”

“Why here?”

“Quiet.”

He smiled.

“See? You just like the room.”

Damn child.

Correct.

He sat beside me.

Then:

“Do you remember Verena?”

“Yes.”

“I barely do.”

That surprised me.

For years, the scandal had seemed enormous.

To him, fragments.

Flowers in urn.

Crying.

Me angry.

Then life continued.

“Do you hate her?”

“No.”

“Rowena?”

“No.”

“Grandma?”

“Which one?”

He laughed.

Good.

Then he touched the urn lid.

Not reverently.

Familiar.

“Do you think Mom cares where this is?”

I thought.

“No.”

“Then why keep it?”

Good question.

“Because we care.”

He nodded.

That was the clean answer.

Not because ashes are person.

Not because memory demands location.

Because rituals serve the living when the living choose them.

Milo stood.

“Come eat.”

“In a minute.”

He raised an eyebrow.

Then:

“Don’t make it an hour.”

I smiled.

Evelyn would have said the same.

Maybe that was memory.

Not possession.

Not competition.

Just a voice carried forward without controlling the room.

I stood.

May you like

Closed no door behind me.

And followed my son back toward the living.
