Chapter 14

Sofia eventually told me why she waited so long to call.

Not because she doubted me.

Because she knew me.

“You would have come sooner.”

“Yes.”

“You would have threatened Julian.”

“Yes.”

“You would have broken the marriage before I decided whether I wanted it broken.”

I sat quietly.

Fair.

“You were trying to protect your choice from me too.”

She smiled sadly.

“Yes.”

That hurt.

Important.

I had spent years believing being a good father meant becoming the fastest weapon when my daughter was threatened.

Sometimes protection can become another person taking over.

Different motive.

Same stolen agency.

“I’m sorry.”

Sofia looked surprised.

“For what?”

“For making you think telling me meant losing control of what happened next.”

Her eyes filled.

“That.”

She nodded.

“That’s what I was afraid of.”

Good.

Painful.

Useful.

I asked:

“What do you need from me now?”

“Be Dad.”

Not boss.

Not judge.

Not strategist.

Dad.

So I brought food.

Held babies.

Walked the hallway at 3:00 A.M. with one screaming granddaughter against my shoulder while Sofia slept forty minutes.

I was terrible at swaddling.

Claire laughed at me.

I allowed it.

Progress.

One night Julian entered the kitchen while I warmed a bottle.

We looked at each other.

Months earlier I would have wanted him gone.

Now?

Still wanted to punch him sometimes.

Different issue.

He said:

“I deserve whatever you think of me.”

“No.”

He frowned.

“You deserve what Sofia decides about her marriage.”

Pause.

“What I think is secondary.”

That surprised both of us.

Good.

I was learning too.

He nodded.

Then took the bottle when I handed it over.

No reconciliation.

Just two men caring for a child neither was allowed to turn into an argument.
