Chapter 12

Vivienne denied meeting Elena at the gate.

For one day.

Then security archives proved Elena’s vehicle had entered the lower access road six weeks after her disappearance.

The camera image was grainy.

The license plate was clear.

Vivienne changed her story.

She said Elena asked her to keep the visit secret.

Elena denied that.

Then Damian’s old phone backups became important.

One message from Vivienne survived.

She's here.

Damian replied:

Do not let her reach C.

C.

Cassandro.

Another message:

If she speaks to him, everything changes.

Vivienne sat across from Cassandro and their attorneys when the messages were shown.

For the first time, she stopped defending herself.

Cassandro asked:

“Why?”

Vivienne looked exhausted.

“At first?”

“Yes.”

“I thought Elena was destroying you.”

Cassandro said nothing.

“She kept talking about leaving. About taking Audrey. About exposing Damian. She hated everything about your life.”

“That was her right.”

Vivienne laughed bitterly.

“You didn't believe that then.”

“No.”

Cassandro looked at her.

“I do now.”

Vivienne continued.

After Elena left, Cassandro collapsed into grief and anger.

Vivienne became indispensable.

She helped with Audrey.

Managed events.

Kept people away when he did not want visitors.

Somewhere inside those months, helping became opportunity.

“I loved you.”

Cassandro believed her.

That did not help.

“And Damian?”

“He was terrified Elena would expose the invoices.”

“So he handled the messages.”

Vivienne nodded.

“He made it look like you.”

“Why keep Elena away after the financial issue could've been solved?”

Vivienne looked down.

“Because by then I didn't want her back.”

There it was.

Not one grand conspiracy from the beginning.

A series of choices.

Hide the invoice problem.

Protect Damian.

Prevent one confrontation.

Then another.

Then keep Elena away because Vivienne had taken her place.

The lie expanded until Audrey’s memory became dangerous enough for Vivienne to hold a child underwater.

Cassandro looked at his wife.

“The marriage is over.”

Vivienne began crying.

May you like

Cassandro stood.

This time, he left before anger made the decision for him.
