Chapter 15

The legal consequences unfolded over the next year.
Damian lost his Moretti contracts and faced civil recovery claims connected to the foundation billing.
The deceptive communications and other conduct became part of broader legal proceedings handled outside family channels.
Vivienne’s poolside treatment of Audrey produced separate consequences.
She accepted responsibility for endangering the child and complied with court-ordered restrictions, counseling, and other conditions imposed through the case.
Cassandro’s assault on Damian and Vivienne was reviewed separately.
He accepted a negotiated misdemeanor outcome, fines, and required anger-management counseling instead of using family influence to bury the footage.
Audrey did not understand any of that.
Her world became simpler.
Daddy’s house.
Mommy’s house.
Therapy on Thursdays.
Swimming lessons only when she wanted them.
For months she refused to enter Cassandro’s pool.
He drained it.
Elena told him that was unnecessary.
Cassandro answered:
“I know.”
He left it empty anyway.
Eventually Audrey asked why there was no water.
“You didn't want it.”
Audrey thought about that.
“I want ducks.”
Cassandro stared at her.
“In the pool?”
She nodded.
He laughed for the first time in days.
The pool did not become a duck pond.
It did become a garden.
Cassandro filled the shallow end with planters and built a small stone path where Audrey had once struggled in the water.
Elena thought it was excessive.
Audrey loved it.
The harder change happened between Cassandro and Elena.
They did not reconcile.
Not romantically.
Not quickly.
They learned to speak again.
School schedules.
Doctor visits.
Audrey’s nightmares.
The things Cassandro changed at home.
The things Elena still did not trust.
Sometimes they argued.
But Elena no longer disappeared after arguments.
Cassandro no longer treated disagreement like betrayal.
One summer afternoon, almost eighteen months after the pool incident, Audrey sat between them on a bench in the garden.
She was drawing three people.
Cassandro.
Elena.
Herself.
Elena looked at the paper.
“Where do we live?”
Audrey pointed at two different houses.
Cassandro smiled.
“Accurate.”
Audrey continued drawing.
Then she asked:
“Mommy coming to my birthday at Daddy’s house?”
Elena looked toward Cassandro.
The old version of him would have answered immediately.
His house.
His daughter.
His decision.
Instead he looked at Elena.
“That’s up to you.”
Elena studied him for a moment.
Then looked at Audrey.
“If you want me there.”
Audrey nodded enthusiastically.
“Both.”
Elena smiled.
“Then I’ll come.”
Audrey returned to her picture.
Cassandro and Elena sat on opposite sides of her.
Not together.
Not enemies.
May you like
Not yet anything else.
And for the first time, neither of them needed to decide what that meant before Audrey finished drawing.
