Chapter 8

Cassandro reopened the entire matter outside the family.

That was the irreversible decision.

Claire explained exactly what it meant.

“You can investigate the project fraud internally.”

“No.”

“You can hire independent accountants.”

“We already did.”

“You can file civil claims without reopening Natalie’s disappearance publicly.”

Cassandro looked at her.

“And leave police believing she abandoned Audrey voluntarily?”

Claire did not answer.

He continued.

“Someone may have manufactured evidence around a disappearance and used my company systems to do it.”

“Yes.”

“If I keep that private because Moretti records are uncomfortable, I’m protecting the same structure that helped them.”

Claire nodded.

“So you understand.”

“Yes.”

The old missing-person matter was formally brought back to investigators with new evidence.

Cassandro supplied the financial audit.

Estate-access records.

Unauthorized credential use.

The intercepted correspondence log.

Audrey’s statements were handled only through child professionals and appropriate investigators.

No capo sat in any interview.

No family lawyer coached staff.

Cassandro also notified the independent directors of Moretti Development that old project approvals may have been falsified.

That invited outside scrutiny into company systems.

Several relatives were furious.

A senior capo came to the estate.

“You’re giving police company servers?”

“Relevant records through counsel.”

“You know what else they may find.”

“If there are other problems, that sentence is not helping.”

The man stared.

“Your father would never open the books over a woman who left.”

Cassandro’s expression changed.

“She was my wife.”

The man said nothing.

“And she was Audrey’s mother.”

Still silence.

Cassandro continued.

“If she left voluntarily, the evidence can survive daylight.”

He stepped closer.

“If she didn’t, then every year we called her a coward was another year we helped whoever made her disappear.”

The capo left.

Cassandro voluntarily stepped away from decisions involving the old riverfront project while the independent review continued.

He also authorized outside monitoring of all family-office correspondence systems.

No spouse.

No cousin.

No capo.

No executive assistant could redirect personal legal correspondence addressed to him without creating a visible record.

The changes irritated half the family.

Good.

Four days later, the Wisconsin police department provided the complete old welfare-contact file.

Natalie had appeared alone.

No visible injuries.

She refused shelter.

She declined to accuse anyone of a crime.

But the officer wrote one sentence never included in the summary Cassandro received:

Subject repeatedly states she cannot return because husband has been shown evidence that will make him believe she betrayed him.

Cassandro read it twice.

Natalie had not said Cassandro threatened her.

She said someone had shown him evidence.

Or she believed they had.

Claire looked at him.

“There’s more.”

Natalie told the officer she intended to contact an attorney once she was “far enough away to think.”

She also asked one question:

“Can someone take my daughter if they say I stole from her father?”

The officer advised her to speak with family counsel.

Cassandro put the report down.

Natalie did not leave because she stopped caring about Audrey.

She left believing she had already been turned into an enemy.
