Chapter 14

I did not execute anyone.
That disappointed some men.
Good.
Too many Bellandis had been raised to believe accountability only counted if blood followed.
I wanted something harder.
Samuel, Peter, and Raymond lost their seats immediately.
No council.
No crews.
No right to advise anyone inside my organization.
The men they once commanded were told exactly why.
Not every detail.
Enough.
They protected a conspiracy that used my wife as leverage and my grief as a political opening.
Adrian lost more.
He lost access to Bellandi decisions entirely.
The family pin came off his lapel in front of the same dining table where he tried to escape.
He stared at it in my hand.
“You’re taking my name.”
“No.”
I put the pin down.
“Your name stays.”
His eyes lifted.
“What changes?”
“The privileges you confused with it.”
That hit harder.
Luca watched quietly.
He wanted nothing.
That made several old men uneasy.
They understood greedy people.
Men who simply walked away from power made them nervous.
Elena stood beside me for part of the meeting.
Only part.
When she grew tired, she left.
Nobody stopped her.
That detail mattered.
For three years every door around Elena opened only when someone else decided.
Now she walked out in the middle of Bellandi business because she wanted sunlight.
Emma went with her.
I watched them leave.
Adrian noticed.
“You still trust servants too much.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
Then toward the door.
“I trusted family too automatically.”
Silence.
That was the lesson none of them wanted.
The Bellandi name had not protected me from betrayal.
Rank had not predicted courage.
Thomas the gardener protected Elena’s birds.
Emma delivered her message.
May you like
Old captains buried her.
I was finished confusing status with loyalty.
