Chapter 8
The three old captains came to the estate that evening.
Samuel Costa.
Peter Valli.
Raymond Greco.
All three had served my father.
All three stood beside me at Elena’s memorial.
I remembered Samuel putting a hand on my shoulder.
Peter telling me not to destroy myself searching ruins.
Raymond saying some doors had to remain closed.
I hated memory that night.
I put Elena’s pendant on the table.
Nobody touched it.
“Which of you knew she lived?”
Samuel stared.
Peter looked at Adrian.
Raymond closed his eyes.
Enough.
“Answer.”
Samuel spoke first.
“Matteo told us she survived the fire.”
My chest tightened.
“All three?”
“Yes.”
“You let me bury an empty coffin.”
Peter flinched.
“Matteo said seeing her would destabilize you.”
I almost laughed.
“You were protecting me?”
“No.”
Raymond’s honesty surprised everyone.
He looked at me.
“We were protecting the structure.”
There it was.
I respected truth even when I hated it.
“What structure?”
“The old families.”
I leaned back.
“From my wife?”
“From what she encouraged you to change.”
Elena had wanted the Bellandi organization less dependent on inherited rank.
Fewer old family privileges.
More men promoted by competence rather than surname.
I agreed.
Matteo did not.
The second council was never emergency management.
It was resistance.
“You hid Elena because she influenced me.”
Samuel nodded.
“And when Matteo died?”
Silence.
I looked at Adrian.
“He told you she died in captivity.”
Peter’s face changed.
Adrian went pale.
There.
Another secret.
Samuel stared at him.
“You said the fever killed her.”
I turned slowly.
Adrian had not merely hidden Elena from me.
He had hidden her survival from his own conspirators.
He wanted sole ownership of the secret.
Raymond looked sick.
“You lied to us.”
Adrian snapped, “You don’t get moral outrage now.”
He was right.
And wrong.
May you like
Nobody in that room was innocent.
They were simply discovering Adrian had betrayed the betrayers too.
