Chapter 17

One year after the dove landed beneath my dinner dome, Elena hosted dinner in the same hall.
Her idea.
I offered another room.
She refused.
“I want this one.”
Emma carried the first tray.
When she reached my place, she stopped.
A silver serving dome covered the plate.
The entire table went quiet.
Not dramatically.
Instinctively.
Memory.
Emma noticed too.
“Boss?”
I looked at Elena.
She smiled.
“Open it.”
I lifted the dome myself.
No bird.
No pendant.
Just roasted vegetables, steak, and a ridiculous little pastry Elena knew I hated.
I stared at her.
She laughed.
“You still make that face.”
The room exhaled.
Thomas sat near the garden doors.
Luca was there too.
Not as heir.
Not as rival.
My brother.
Still strange.
Becoming less so.
Adrian was not at the table.
Some absences are boundaries, not wounds.
After dinner, Elena opened the balcony doors.
A white dove flew in from the rebuilt glasshouse and landed on the railing.
Nothing tied to its leg.
No message.
No emergency.
Just a bird coming home because it wanted to.
Elena stood beside me.
“Better?”
I looked at it.
“Yes.”
She touched the pendant around her neck.
The same one that returned to me beneath the serving dome.
I had offered to replace it.
She refused.
“It did its job.”
Then she looked at me.
“So did Emma.”
Across the room, Emma was helping clear plates while arguing with Thomas about whether birds should be allowed near dining tables.
Normal noise.
Ordinary life.
For years I believed a Mafia boss protected his family by knowing every secret first.
I was wrong.
My own relatives hid my wife beneath my estate while men with titles told me to stop searching.
A gardener kept hope alive.
A maid lifted a lid.
A bird carried the truth.
Power had failed me because power was exactly what the conspiracy understood how to manipulate.
What saved Elena was simpler.

Someone small enough to be ignored still chose to notice.
And when the truth finally reached my table, I chose to listen.
