Alina asked to speak with Ramona alone.
I said no.
Then stopped.
Wrong instinct.
I corrected myself.
“Do you want me nearby?”
“Yes.”
Better.
Her choice.
We met in the empty polo lounge.
I stayed by the door.
Ramona sat across from Alina.
No jewelry removed.
No theatrical humiliation.
Just two women.
One had spent years believing the other came from lesser blood.
Ramona spoke first.
“You won.”
Alina shook her head.
“My father is still dead.”
That ended the competition immediately.
Ramona’s face hardened.
“You have Lorenzo.”
“Yes.”
“The house.”
“Yes.”
“His daughter.”
“Our daughter.”
That hurt Ramona.
Good.
Alina continued.
“You keep measuring what I have because you think that explains why I wanted truth.”
“Doesn’t it?”
“No.”
She placed Daniel’s token on the table.
“I wanted to know why my father died ashamed.”
Ramona looked away.
There.
Not status.
Not inheritance.
A daughter wanting context.
“My father spent years believing Vittorio thought he was a thief.”
Alina’s voice shook.
“He died with that.”
Ramona said nothing.
“Your father knew he was innocent.”
“Yes.”
“And you knew later.”
“Yes.”
“Then you looked at me every Christmas and called my blood cheap.”
Ramona finally snapped.
“You walked into everything we built.”
Alina stared.
“No.”
She pushed the token toward her.
“Your father built part of it by standing on mine.”
Silence.
Ramona’s eyes filled unexpectedly.
Not remorse yet.
Something older.
“My father told us if Daniel’s name ever came back, everything could be taken.”
There.
Fear inherited too.
Alina nodded.
“And you believed him.”
“Yes.”
“So you tried to take me instead.”
Ramona closed her eyes.
No defense.
Good.
Alina stood.
“I don’t forgive you.”
Ramona looked up.
“But I’m also not spending the rest of my life proving I belong here.”
She took the token back.
“This is not my admission ticket.”
Then she walked past me.
I followed.
No dramatic ending.
No forced reconciliation.
