Chapter 14

Lucy stopped sleeping alone for three weeks.

Every night she asked:

“Mommy here?”

Every night Alina answered:

“Yes.”

Not forever.

Not always.

Just here.

Tonight.

That mattered.

One evening Lucy asked me instead.

“Daddy, Mommy goes away?”

I sat beside her.

“Only if Mommy chooses to go somewhere.”

She frowned.

“Ramona said—”

“Ramona was wrong.”

“Bad?”

“She made a bad choice.”

Lucy thought.

“Very bad?”

“Yes.”

Satisfied.

Children like scale.

Then she asked something harder.

“Mommy cheap?”

My chest tightened.

“No.”

“What cheap?”

I looked toward Alina in the doorway.

She let me answer.

“It means something doesn’t cost much.”

Lucy looked at her mother.

“Mommy costs?”

Alina laughed despite herself.

I smiled.

“No.”

“Then weird.”

“Yes.”

Very.

We did not explain class prejudice to a three-year-old.

Not yet.

But I remembered the question.

Because one day she would understand what Ramona meant.

When that day came, I wanted the story ready.

Not polished.

Truthful.

Daniel worked with horses.

Daniel saved her grandfather.

Daniel was framed.

Daniel struggled after.

Daniel loved his daughter.

Daniel was imperfect.

Daniel mattered.

Nothing about employment made his blood dirty.

A few nights later, Alina found me looking at old club photographs.

“You’re doing it again.”

“What?”

“Punishing yourself.”

I looked at her.

“I ignored things.”

“Yes.”

“You told me Marcus treated you like staff.”

“Yes.”

“I laughed.”

“Yes.”

I hated how calmly she said it.

“Why stay?”

She thought.

“Because one stupid response wasn’t the whole marriage.”

Then:

“But I almost stopped telling you things.”

That hurt more.

Trust does not always break loudly.

Sometimes people simply stop bringing you information.

I looked at her.

“I don’t want that.”

“Then don’t make me prove discomfort before you respect it.”

Clean.

Useful.

Painful.

I nodded.

That became our rule.

No more requiring evidence before listening.

Questions first.

May you like

Defensiveness later.

Preferably never.
