Chapter 16

Ramona returned to the polo club six months later.
Not to command.
To see Marcus.
He had been working under Luca without rank privileges.
It suited him badly at first.
Then better.
Ramona found Alina near the north tack room.
I was close enough to see.
Far enough not to interfere.
Ramona stopped.
Alina did too.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Ramona looked toward the old storage cabinet.
“Is that where you found it?”
Alina nodded.
Ramona laughed bitterly.
“My father searched that room for years.”
“Daniel knew horses better.”
A tiny smile touched Alina’s face.
Ramona almost returned it.
Almost.
Then:
“I hated you before I knew you.”
Alina’s expression did not change.
“I know.”
“I hated what you represented.”
“I know.”
“I thought if Daniel’s daughter could marry Lorenzo and sit at the donor table, then everything my father told me about who belonged where was a lie.”
Alina stared.
“That was the problem?”
“Yes.”
Ramona’s eyes filled.
“Not the token.”
“No.”
“Not my father.”
“Not really.”
Silence.
Alina nodded.
“Then you tried to make the world match the lie.”
Ramona closed her eyes.
Exactly.
There was nothing else to say.
She did not ask forgiveness.
Good.
Before leaving, Ramona looked at the stable aisle.
“My father used to say Daniel smelled like horses.”
Alina smiled sadly.
“He did.”
Ramona waited.
“I loved that smell.”
That surprised her.
Good.
People who use class as shame often forget the thing they despise may also contain someone else’s happiest memories.
Ramona left.
No reconciliation.
No hug.
But something had shifted.
Not trust.
Understanding.
Sometimes that is the most realistic improvement available.
Later, Lucy entered the tack room holding the old brass token.
I frowned.
“Where did you get that?”
“Mommy.”
Alina appeared behind her.
“She asked.”
Lucy turned it over.
“Grandpa coin?”
“Yes.”
“Magic?”
“No.”
She looked disappointed.
Alina crouched.
“It means Grandpa Daniel did something brave once.”
Lucy brightened.
“Horse?”
“Yes.”
Good enough.
The token became a family story.
Not evidence.
Not leverage.
Not permission to belong.
May you like
Just history.
Where it should have been all along.
