Chapter 1

I had Evan halfway through the gate when he tugged my hand.
“Mom.”
I stopped.
His cheek was red.
His stomach growled loudly enough that I heard it.
My anger sharpened all over again.
Behind us, Diane was still on the ground with Emily helping her sit up while relatives gathered around.
I had slapped her.
I had forced that piece of chicken against her mouth.
The image returned immediately.
I hated what she had done to my son.
I also knew rage did not make everything I did afterward right.
But I could deal with myself later.
Right now my child was hungry.
I crouched.
“When did you last eat?”
Evan looked toward the house.
That frightened me.
“This morning?”
He shook his head.
“Grandma said no.”
My stomach dropped.
“What do you mean, no?”
He rubbed one sneaker against the driveway.
“She said I asked too much yesterday.”
Yesterday?
We had arrived less than four hours ago.
Then I remembered.
Emily had taken Evan into the kitchen shortly after we arrived.
When he returned, I asked whether he had eaten.
Emily said yes.
I looked back toward the yard.
She was staring at me now.
No smile.
No laughter.
Only fear.
I stood.
“Stay beside me.”
I walked back through the gate.
Diane’s face changed immediately.
“What now?”
I ignored her.
“Emily.”
She swallowed.
“Did you feed Evan in the kitchen?”
Silence.
My heart started pounding.
“Emily.”
“No.”
One word.
Everything shifted.
“Why did you tell me you did?”
She looked at Diane.
There.
Not one cruel grandmother.
A system.
Diane snapped:
“He needs discipline.”
I turned slowly.
“With food?”
“He needs to learn that whining doesn’t get rewarded.”
Evan whispered behind me:
“I didn’t whine.”
I believed him.
Then Emily said:
“Claire…”
Her voice broke.
“This isn’t the first time.”
I stared at her.
“How many?”
She began crying.
“I don’t know.”
Diane shouted her name.
Emily flinched.
Then finally looked at me.
“Almost every visit since Daniel died.”
My husband had been dead eighteen months.
May you like
My son had been hungry in front of me for a year and a half.
And I had never known.
