Chapter 11

Four months later, Evan asked about Diane.
“Grandma still mad?”
“No.”
“Sad?”
“Probably.”
“Can she come park?”
My heart tightened.
His choice.
We arranged thirty minutes.
Public park.
Emily there.
Me there.
Diane arrived with no food.
Good.
She crouched.
Evan stayed beside my leg.
“You hungry?” she asked automatically.
Then froze.
Wrong opening.
Her face crumpled.
She corrected herself.
“Sorry.”
Evan looked confused.
Then showed her a toy truck.
Children offer mercy without naming it.
Diane played for twelve minutes.
No hug.
No apology speech.
No demand.
Then Evan wanted the swings.
May you like
Meeting ended.
That was enough.
