Chapter 13

Damian Mercer came to the Red Room willingly.

That told me everything about his mindset.

He did not think he had done anything shameful.

He arrived in an old dark suit wearing my grandfather’s ring and looked at Sabrina as though she were still sixteen.

“You’ve caused enough chaos.”

Sabrina laughed softly.

“I got threatened, tracked, and nearly had my son flown away.”

Damian frowned.

“Because you made private resources a family problem.”

There it was immediately.

Not Ellis’s threats.

Not Noah’s fear.

Her resources.

I looked at him.

“You worked with Marcus.”

“I advised him.”

“You advised him to leak reserve access.”

“No.”

He looked offended.

“I advised him to restore male oversight.”

Sabrina stared at him.

“Over my money?”

“Over Mercer assets.”

“My father left it to me.”

“Your father became sentimental late in life.”

I almost smiled.

Same accusation every controlling man makes when another man protects someone.

Sentimental.

Soft.

Influenced.

Damian continued.

“Ellis was your husband. Noah is his son. The reserve should have passed into structured household control.”

Sabrina’s face hardened.

“I divorced him.”

“Exactly.”

That one word said everything.

To Damian, divorce meant Sabrina broke the structure.

The reserve made it possible.

Therefore the reserve was the problem.

Not Ellis.

Not control.

Freedom.

I leaned forward.

“Did you tell Ellis about six million?”

“Yes.”

Simple.

No shame.

“Did you know he threatened Noah?”

“No.”

“Would it have changed your plan?”

He hesitated.

Too long.

Sabrina saw it.

“So no.”

Damian sighed. “Children survive unpleasant lessons.”

The room became very quiet.

I thought of Noah’s shaking voice.

If I didn’t listen, she’d hurt Mom.

Unpleasant lesson.

That phrase would stay with me.

I looked at Damian.

“You lose council influence.”

He smiled.

“You can’t erase age.”

“No.”

I sat back.

“But I can stop confusing it with wisdom.”

His smile disappeared.

“You’ll regret dismantling the old protections.”

Sabrina spoke before I could.

“They weren’t protecting me.”

Damian looked at her.

“They protected the family from your choices.”

There.

The clearest version.

Not protect Sabrina.

Protect family from Sabrina.

I understood now.

The emergency reserve did exactly what my father intended.

It made her choices harder to control.

That was why men like Damian considered it dangerous.

I looked at Vincent.

“Open the reserve charter.”

Damian frowned.

“For what?”

“To expand it.”

Sabrina turned toward me.

Damian’s face went pale.

May you like

I almost smiled.

The thing they tried hardest to destroy was about to become larger.
