Chapter 7

My father’s recording began with Sabrina’s name.

Not mine.

That surprised everyone except Vincent.

“Sabrina,” my father said, his old voice filling the archive chamber, “if Adrian is hearing this with you, then something already went wrong.”

My sister looked at me.

I said nothing.

The recording continued.

“I created the black reserve because daughters in families like ours are too often told protection must come through a husband, father, brother, or son.”

Vanessa looked away.

Marcus Vale stared at the floor.

My father said:

“If anyone ever tells you Mercer money belongs to the man who shares your home, they are lying.”

Sabrina began crying.

Quietly.

No one touched her.

She needed room.

Then my father explained the second purpose of the reserve.

Six million dollars was enough to disappear.

But the Red Room also contained something more dangerous: a list of independent Mercer loyalties that answered directly to Sabrina if Adrian ever became compromised.

I stared at Vincent.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“So she had a parallel protection circle.”

“Not command.”

He looked at Sabrina.

“Escape.”

That distinction mattered.

My father had not built my sister an army to challenge me.

He built her doors.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Same thing if enough men answer.”

My father’s recorded voice continued as if responding to her.

“Anyone who calls a woman’s exit route disloyalty is probably the reason she needs one.”

The room went dead silent.

Sabrina looked at Marcus Vale.

He could not meet her eyes.

Then the recording changed.

My father named three men who must never be allowed to control Sabrina’s reserve.

One was dead.

One had retired.

The third—

Marcus Vale.

My hands went cold.

The man in front of me had been identified as a risk years before Sabrina married Ellis.

Why?

The recording answered.

“Marcus believes family women are safest when their resources are controlled by family men. He calls it tradition. It is dependency.”

Marcus’s face hardened.

“You’re taking the word of a dead man over a living capo?”

I almost smiled.

“He understood you before I did.”

Then came the final message.

“If Sabrina has a son, never let anyone use the boy to transfer her authority.”

Noah.

I looked at Vanessa.

She stopped breathing.

That was the entire plan.

Not merely steal a card.

Use Noah’s bloodline to redirect Sabrina’s reserve into male control.

May you like

My father had predicted the mechanism.

And someone had spent years trying to make it happen anyway.
