Chapter 6

We found Marcus in the archive chamber with Vanessa.

She had reached the winery through another route.

Of course.

Ellis was never the whole plan.

He was force.

Vanessa was movement.

Marcus was access.

Three people doing different jobs so none of them had to understand the full betrayal until it was too late.

Vanessa looked at Sabrina and actually smiled.

“You always make everything harder than it has to be.”

My sister’s face changed.

That sentence had history.

I heard it.

“So this was you.”

Vanessa shrugged.

“If she had signed over the reserve authority two years ago, nobody would be standing here.”

Sabrina stared.

“You were already with Ellis then.”

Vanessa’s smile sharpened.

“Before you knew.”

There it was.

Not affair.

Strategy.

She had been inside Sabrina’s marriage before Sabrina knew she had competition.

Marcus Vale stepped forward.

“Boss, this does not need to become internal war.”

I looked at him.

“You sold my sister.”

“No.”

“You gave them reserve access.”

“I created insurance.”

Again.

That word.

People love respectable nouns when the truth is ugly.

“Against me?”

“Against instability.”

Sabrina laughed softly.

Marcus looked at her with irritation.

“You were becoming a liability.”

My bodyguards shifted.

I lifted one hand.

No movement.

I wanted him talking.

“How?”

“You divorced Ellis. You kept Noah. You still had access to six million and emergency Mercer routes.”

“That’s called protection,” I said.

“No. It’s leverage.”

There.

He believed it.

Marcus had spent so long thinking like a capo he no longer understood why my father gave Sabrina independent escape access.

To him, any resource not controlled by command was a threat.

Vanessa walked toward the sealed cabinet at the end of the room.

“The reserve isn’t even the real problem.”

I looked at her.

“What is?”

She tapped the cabinet.

“Your father’s last succession recording.”

Vincent went pale.

I turned.

“You knew?”

He nodded slowly.

“Your father left one sealed recording for Sabrina.”

My sister froze.

“For me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vincent looked at Marcus Vale.

“Because he knew some Mercer men would eventually decide Sabrina’s money belonged to whoever controlled her marriage.”

Silence.

My father had expected this.

Not Ellis specifically.

The method.

A husband.

A child.

A reserve.

Men calling ownership protection.

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

I looked at the sealed cabinet.

May you like

The six million was bait.

The recording was the reason people inside Mercer had helped Ellis come this far.
