Chapter 11

Vanessa slapped Julian.

He barely moved.

Then smiled.

“Feel better?”

Her breathing shook.

“No.”

“Good.”

His arrogance remained.

Even exposed.

Even abandoned.

That made the room hate him more.

Ethan stepped toward him.

Bodyguards blocked the path.

Julian laughed.

“Look at you.”

His eyes ran over Ethan’s bruised tuxedo.

“All that swagger.”

“All that talk about men and power.”

A contemptuous smile.

“And you still needed your sister’s boyfriend to promise you a crew before anyone knew your name.”

Ethan’s face darkened.

Vanessa snapped:

“Enough.”

Julian turned toward her.

“You don't get to say that now.”

“You wore a fake child for six months.”

She stared.

Julian continued.

“You let women congratulate you.”

“Let children talk to your stomach.”

His eyes moved toward Avice.

“You let her believe she was getting a cousin.”

Avice looked down.

For the first time, Vanessa’s face showed something close to shame.

Then Julian smiled.

“And now you want dignity?”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

Cesare watched.

Julian’s cruelty was no longer strategic.

It was reflex.

A habit.

The same one he had accused Cesare of building through pressure.

Except Julian had chosen to sharpen it.

Edmund spoke.

“Mr. Lombardi.”

Cesare looked toward him.

The butler’s voice remained formal.

“I struck Miss Avice.”

Avice watched.

Edmund did not look at her.

“I dragged her.”

Silence.

“I intended to lock her away until the staged fall was complete.”

Cesare’s face hardened.

Edmund finally met his eyes.

“I did it because I believed Mr. Julian represented the future of this house.”

Cesare said nothing.

Edmund’s voice lowered.

“And because I resented what your grief made of this place.”

Avice’s fingers tightened around her cardigan.

Edmund looked toward her.

Not warmly.

But honestly.

“That resentment was mine.”

A pause.

“Not hers.”

Cesare watched him.

Edmund had finally separated motive from excuse.

Julian scoffed.

“How noble.”

Edmund turned.

Julian continued.

“You slap a toddler, then discover morality when your promotion disappears.”

The butler’s face hardened.

Julian smiled.

“You're still exactly what I called you.”

“Furniture.”

That was the last bridge.

Edmund removed the small brass household key ring from his belt.

Placed it on the table.

Then stepped away from Julian.

No speech.

No allegiance to Cesare.

Simply refusal.

Ethan followed.

He removed the black lapel pin Julian had given him privately months earlier.

Dropped it beside the keys.

Vanessa stared at Julian.

Then reached beneath her gown.

Not for another belly.

For a thin black ribbon tied around her waist.

She tore it free.

Julian’s private faction symbol.

She dropped it at his feet.

Three allies.

Gone.

Julian looked around.

Then laughed.

Still haughty.

Still unwilling to show fear.

“You think this changes anything?”

His eyes moved toward the three capos.

“They didn't join me because Vanessa wore padding.”

“They joined because they were done with you.”

He looked at Cesare.

“And that part is still true.”

The room turned toward the capos.

May you like

Julian had lost his accomplices.

But the deeper fracture inside Cesare’s family remained.
