Chapter 7

Vanessa stared at Julian.
“What did she mean?”
Julian’s voice became hard.
“She misunderstood.”
Avice immediately shook her head.
“No.”
Vanessa looked at the child.
The old cruelty returned.
“You don't even know what the words mean.”
Avice flinched.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You heard grown-ups talking through a door.”
Her lip curled.
“And now you’ve decided you’re some little detective.”
Cesare’s eyes hardened.
Vanessa ignored him.
“Do you know how exhausting you are?”
Avice’s eyes filled.
Vanessa continued because cruelty was the only power she still recognized.
“Always listening.”
“Always staring.”
“Always running to Grandpa.”
She tilted her head.
“No wonder your uncle wanted one evening that wasn't about you.”
Cesare moved.
Avice grabbed his hand.
He stopped.
The child looked at Vanessa.
Then whispered:
“I only wanted to know if the baby was a girl.”
The sentence silenced the room.
Avice had not been spying.
She had been curious about a baby she thought would be family.
Vanessa’s face tightened.
No guilt.
Only irritation.
Cesare looked at Julian.
His son had heard it too.
Something crossed his face.
Then disappeared.
Vanessa turned back.
“What happens after I fall?”
Julian exhaled.
“You leave.”
“With you?”
Silence.
Her eyes narrowed.
“With you?”
Julian looked away.
That was enough.
Ethan stepped forward.
“You told us the three of us leave together.”
Julian’s jaw tightened.
“I told you what was necessary.”
Ethan’s face changed.
Cesare saw it.
The exact arrogance Julian had accused him of—
now emerging in Julian.
Vanessa’s voice became colder.
“What was necessary?”
Julian finally looked at her.
“The scene.”
“The split.”
“The witnesses.”
Vanessa’s face drained.
“And me?”
Julian paused.
Too long.
She understood.
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came.
Ethan stepped toward Julian.
“You promised my sister protection.”
Julian laughed once.
“Your sister promised me a convincing performance.”
Vanessa stared.
His contempt surfaced.
“You think I was going to marry a woman who wore foam under her dress for six months?”
The ballroom froze.
Vanessa’s eyes filled with rage.
Julian continued.
“You were useful because people believed you were pregnant.”
A slow, cruel smile.
“Don't confuse useful with permanent.”
Ethan lunged.
Cesare’s bodyguards stopped him before he reached Julian.
Vanessa looked humiliated.
Then furious.
Cesare watched.
Power had shifted again.
But Julian was not done.
He looked at Vanessa.
“If tonight worked, you would leave Boston for a while.”
“For how long?”
“Long enough.”
“And when I came back?”
Julian did not answer.
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You were going to say I lost the baby and couldn’t handle the grief.”
Silence.
She understood.
Ethan understood.
Edmund looked toward Julian.
Even his confidence weakened.
The scheme had always contained an exit.
And Julian’s allies had never asked what happened to them after he no longer needed the lie.
Then Edmund spoke.
“Mr. Julian.”
His voice remained severe.
But something had changed.
“You said no one in this house would be discarded.”
Julian looked at him.
A contemptuous smile.
“You're a butler, Edmund.”
The old man went still.
“You serve whoever owns the room.”
Cesare watched the insult land.
Thirty years of service reduced to one sentence.
May you like
Edmund’s eyes changed.
Julian had just broken the loyalty keeping his secret alive.
