Chapter 14

Julian did not apologize.
That mattered.
He lifted his chin.
Looked at Cesare.
Then at the capos.
“I still believe you should step aside.”
His voice was steady.
Cesare nodded.
“You're allowed to.”
Julian’s eyes narrowed.
“But not like this.”
“No.”
“Not through Avice.”
“No.”
“Not through Vanessa.”
“No.”
Julian gave a bitter smile.
“Convenient.”
Cesare did not react.
The three dissenting capos asked Julian whether he would still challenge Cesare without the staged miscarriage.
Julian looked at them.
“Yes.”
“Without Ethan’s crews?”
“Yes.”
“Without Vanessa’s sympathy?”
“Yes.”
“Without using Marco against him?”
That question stopped him.
Lorenzo waited.
Julian’s jaw tightened.
No answer.
That was the problem.
Julian’s entire challenge had become fused to old grief.
He could not separate leadership from revenge.
The capos saw it.
One by one, they withdrew support.
Not permanently from reform.
From Julian.
His face changed.
There.
Not fear.
Rage.
He looked at them.
“You spineless old men.”
Lorenzo remained still.
Julian continued.
“You complain behind closed doors for years.”
“Then the moment somebody acts, you hide behind a child.”
Lorenzo’s expression hardened.
“No.”
“We watched you use one.”
That ended it.
Julian looked toward Cesare.
Waiting.
Maybe expecting triumph.
Cesare gave none.
He removed Julian’s authority over the household guards.
The ballroom staff.
The family charity operations.
He stripped the private faction symbols from recognition.
Not through courts.
Not police.
Inside the house.
Inside the hierarchy Julian had tried to seize.
Vanessa was told to leave the mansion.
Ethan too.
He laughed.
Haughtily to the end.
“You think throwing us out makes you powerful?”
Cesare looked at him.
“No.”
Ethan’s smile weakened.
“It makes you outside.”
That hurt more.
Vanessa stood beside the door.
She looked toward Avice one final time.
The child remained beside Cesare.
Vanessa’s mouth tightened.
Then she said:
“You think she won?”
Cesare’s eyes hardened.
Vanessa continued.
“She’ll grow up in the same house.”
“With the same men.”
“The same secrets.”
Her smile returned.
“Maybe one day she’ll understand why Julian hated being second to a ghost.”
Avice did not understand.
Cesare did.
He answered:
“Maybe.”
Vanessa frowned.
Cesare continued.
“And if she does, she’ll also learn hatred is not permission.”
No more argument.
Vanessa left.
Ethan followed.
Edmund remained.
His posture rigid.
He placed the final estate key on the table.
“I will go.”
Cesare looked at him.
“Yes.”
Edmund’s face tightened.
Thirty-seven years.
Ended in one word.
He looked toward Avice.
She hid slightly behind Cesare.
That was answer enough.
Edmund left without asking forgiveness.
Julian remained last.
Cesare looked at him.
“You can leave the mansion.”
Julian laughed bitterly.
“You mean exile.”
“No.”
Cesare’s gaze stayed steady.
“I mean leave.”
A pause.
“What happens after that is the first decision in years you will make without building it around me.”
Julian stared.
Then removed his family signet ring.
For a second Cesare thought he would throw it.
Instead Julian placed it on the table.
“I don't want this.”
Cesare looked at the ring.
Then at his son.
“That is your choice.”
Julian walked out.
Avice watched him go.
Then looked up at Cesare.
“Is Uncle Julian bad?”
Cesare crouched beside her.
“No.”
The answer surprised everyone.
He continued.
“He did bad things.”
Avice thought.
“Can he stop?”
Cesare looked toward the empty doorway.
May you like
“I don't know.”
That uncertainty became the one thing no amount of power could command.
