Chapter 10

The transfer trail changed everything.
Helen had indeed moved the money.
That part was real.
She sold a vacation property in Rhode Island six months earlier.
The proceeds went into a holding account she believed was being used to refinance Trent’s debt.
She never knew Gabriele’s name had been attached downstream.
Trent did.
He designed it.
The same structure appeared everywhere.
Gabriele’s credentials on archive theft.
Helen’s computer on access logs.
Helen’s burner on calls.
Gabriele’s name on council invitations.
Helen’s money routed through Gabriele.
Trent had not merely planned to overthrow Alessio.
He had built a second version of the conspiracy in which his own biological parents appeared to be the masterminds.
If he succeeded, he gained power.
If he failed, Helen and Gabriele took the fall.
Helen stood across from her son.
Her hands were completely still now.
That frightened Alessio more than tears.
“You were going to give us to him.”
Trent’s jaw tightened.
“Only if I had to.”
Gabriele stared at him.
For the first time, the older man’s eyes contained no guilt.
Only disbelief.
“You used my name.”
Trent laughed once.
“You gave me yours without giving me the truth.”
Gabriele took one step toward him.
Then stopped.
His breathing changed.
Alessio watched him choose restraint.
That mattered.
Helen did not.
She moved closer.
“I protected you your entire life.”
Trent’s eyes turned cold.
“You protected your secret.”
Her face twisted.
“That is not the same thing.”
“To me it is.”
Silence.
Then Sylvia spoke.
“You keep doing that.”
Trent looked at her.
Her voice trembled, but she did not look away.
“You turn what someone did to you into permission for what you do to everyone else.”
Trent’s face hardened.
“You think you understand me?”
“No.”
Sylvia’s fingers closed around her sling.
“I understand being hurt.”
A pause.
“I didn't break anyone’s arm afterward.”
The room went silent.
That landed.
Even Trent had no immediate answer.
Alessio looked down at the evidence spread across the table.
The major betrayal was finally clear.
Trent had spent years believing himself trapped beneath Alessio’s authority and beneath a false family history.
When he learned Gabriele was his biological father, he did not seek truth.
He saw leverage.
He blackmailed Gabriele into granting access.
Used Helen’s guilt to obtain money.
Used Sylvia’s biometric authorization to open Gate Nine.
Used her marriage to move through Grimaldi spaces nobody else could reach.
Then he prepared a coup where every failure could be blamed on the two people who had spent decades protecting him.
Helen whispered:
“When did you find out about Gabriele?”
Trent’s eyes moved toward her.
“Two years ago.”
Gabriele’s head snapped up.
Helen’s face drained.
Two years.
Trent had known.
For two years he let both of them believe the secret still belonged to them.
He had been studying them.
Testing what guilt could buy.
Then Trent smiled.
Small.
Cruel.
“You want the worst part?”
Alessio looked at him.
Trent’s eyes moved toward Sylvia.
“She wasn't supposed to hear Gate Nine.”
Sylvia’s face changed.
“What was I supposed to hear?”
Trent leaned back.
“The recording.”
Everyone froze.
He had intentionally left the fake Alessio audio playing where Sylvia would discover it.

The abuse, the locked room, even the broken arm had not begun because Sylvia accidentally found the conspiracy.
Trent had been deliberately turning his own wife into the witness who would carry the fake evidence straight to Alessio.
