Chapter 14

Sylvia rented an apartment in Beacon Hill.

Small.

Quiet.

No family guards inside unless she requested them.

Alessio hated that.

He respected it.

Those two feelings had to learn to coexist.

Helen asked to visit.

Sylvia refused.

Gabriele asked once.

Sylvia said not yet.

Alessio did not ask.

He waited.

For the first time in his life, waiting became an act of love instead of weakness.

Meanwhile, formal investigations continued.

Trent’s shell companies were reviewed.

The stolen archive drive was recovered from a storage unit linked to one of his associates.

The original recordings proved the fabricated audio.

The Gate Nine documents corroborated Sylvia’s forced authorization.

Her medical records documented the fracture and repeated injury.

No single piece solved everything.

Together they built a pattern.

Helen cooperated fully.

Not to save herself.

At least not only.

She handed over years of messages with Trent.

Some were ugly.

Sylvia being described as difficult.

Emotional.

Spoiled.

Ungrateful.

Helen had participated in that framing.

She read her own words and cried.

Then signed the statement anyway.

Gabriele resigned permanently from his consigliere role.

Alessio refused to stop him.

“You think I deserve exile?”

Gabriele stood across from him.

“No.”

His voice was tired.

“I think I spent twenty-eight years telling you truth while making one exception.”

Alessio’s eyes hardened slightly.

“Trent.”

“Yes.”

“And one exception was enough.”

Gabriele removed his family ring.

Placed it on the desk.

Alessio pushed it back.

“Keep that.”

Gabriele looked confused.

“Your position is gone.”

Alessio’s voice softened.

“Our history isn't.”

Gabriele’s eyes dropped.

He took the ring.

No forgiveness.

Not yet.

But not erasure either.

The organization changed.

Promotions required independent review.

No family member could control another relative’s access credentials.

Staff could report domestic abuse or coercion directly to outside counsel.

Several older capos mocked the changes.

Alessio ignored them.

Then Helen called.

Her voice sounded different.

Smaller.

“I found something.”

“What?”

“A letter Trent kept.”

Alessio went still.

“From who?”

“Charles.”

Trent’s legal father.

The man who raised him.

The letter had never been opened.

Addressed to Trent.

Written days before Charles died.

Helen’s voice shook.

“I think he knew.”

Alessio’s hand tightened around the phone.

“Knew what?”

“That Gabriele was Trent’s biological father.”

Another old relationship shifted.

May you like

Charles had apparently known the secret everyone believed Helen had successfully hidden.

And he had chosen to raise Trent anyway.
