Chapter 12

The council convened the next evening.

Every senior capo attended.

No one spoke when Sylvia entered.

Her sling did more than any speech could have.

Trent sat beside counsel.

Helen sat behind him.

Gabriele stood alone against the wall.

He had removed his consigliere pin.

Alessio noticed.

Said nothing.

The dinner recording played first.

Helen’s laughter.

Sylvia’s fear.

Trent grabbing her.

Alessio striking him.

Then the earlier audio.

Trent coaching his mother.

The room changed.

One capo shifted away from Trent.

Another looked down.

Power moved silently.

Then the fake Alessio recording played.

Afterward, the forensic report demonstrated the spliced source material.

Trent interrupted.

“You think technical analysis matters once men hear what they already suspect?”

Alessio looked at him.

Trent leaned forward.

His confidence returned in front of an audience.

That was where he was strongest.

“You rule through fear.”

His voice carried.

“You remove people when they challenge you.”

He looked around the table.

“You all know it.”

Nobody denied it.

That was the danger.

Trent’s conspiracy was built around real weaknesses.

Alessio stood.

“Correct.”

Several men looked up.

Trent frowned.

Alessio continued.

“I have ruled through fear.”

Silence.

“I have mistaken obedience for loyalty.”

Gabriele’s eyes lifted.

“I told my sister marriage was private when she was asking me for help.”

Sylvia’s breath caught.

Alessio looked at her.

“I was wrong.”

No defense.

No performance.

The room shifted again.

Trent had prepared for denial.

Not accountability.

Alessio turned toward the council.

“That is mine.”

Then toward Trent.

“This is yours.”

The evidence continued.

Gate Nine.

Sylvia’s forced biometric authorization.

Archive theft.

The false audio.

Helen’s money.

Gabriele’s credentials.

The staged dinner confrontation.

The coup list.

Then Gabriele stepped forward.

Every man in the room knew him.

Trusted him.

He placed his old pin on the table.

“I protected Trent because he is my son.”

A wave moved through the room.

Trent’s jaw hardened.

Gabriele continued.

“I concealed mistakes.”

“Recommended promotions.”

“Made excuses.”

His voice dropped.

“That dishonored this chair long before Trent tried to take it.”

Alessio watched him.

Gabriele looked older now.

But lighter.

Then Helen stood.

Her hands shook.

“I knew my son was hurting Sylvia.”

Sylvia closed her eyes.

Helen swallowed.

“And I protected him because I spent his whole life trying to make up for the truth I hid.”

Her voice cracked.

“That made me useful to him.”

Trent’s face hardened.

“Sit down.”

Helen turned.

For the first time, she did not obey.

“No.”

One word.

Power shifted again.

Then a capo at the far end spoke.

“I supported Trent.”

Everyone turned.

Alessio recognized him.

Martin Vescari.

Twenty years beside the family.

Martin's face was pale.

“I didn't know about Sylvia.”

Trent looked toward him.

Martin continued.

“I supported a leadership challenge.”

Alessio remained silent.

“How many?”

Martin looked down.

“Four of us.”

May you like

The conspiracy was wider than Trent.

And the council had just split in front of Alessio.
