Chapter 11

Laurel did not shout.

That frightened Anthony more.

Her eyes stayed on him.

“Did you know Marcia was going to touch me?”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

Laurel’s breathing remained shallow.

“Did you know she planned to challenge me publicly?”

“Yes.”

Anthony did not hide it.

Victor watched them.

Satisfied.

Laurel’s hand dropped from Mia’s shoulder.

“What did you know?”

“For three days I'd heard she was organizing opposition.”

“And you didn't tell me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Anthony’s fingers slowly closed.

“I needed to know who stood with her.”

Laurel stared at him.

“So you used me.”

“No.”

Her eyes flashed.

“You sat there.”

The words were quiet.

That made them worse.

“You watched her drag me down in front of everyone.”

Anthony’s jaw tightened.

“I thought she was going to talk.”

“She had my hair in her hand.”

“I stood the second I understood—”

“You said continue.”

Silence.

Victor’s smile widened.

Anthony looked toward him.

Laurel saw it.

“Don't.”

Anthony stopped.

“Don't look at him because you're angry at what I'm saying.”

His eyes returned to hers.

Mia looked between her parents.

Laurel saw the child.

Her entire posture changed.

She crouched.

“Sweetheart, go with Rosa.”

A trusted caregiver took Mia from the room.

Only after the doors closed did Laurel stand again.

Anthony spoke.

“I made a calculation.”

Her eyes filled.

“I know.”

The disappointment in her voice cut deeper than anger.

“That is the problem.”

Anthony had spent his life making calculations with other people’s fear.

He had told himself this one was controlled.

Marcia would speak.

Supporters would reveal themselves.

Anthony would end it.

Instead his wife was forced to her knees before he intervened.

He had not caused Marcia’s violence.

He had still allowed risk because exposure mattered more than warning Laurel.

Victor leaned back.

“Beautiful family.”

Anthony slowly turned.

Laurel’s hand caught his wrist.

He looked at her.

“No.”

One word.

His breathing stopped.

She released him.

“You don't get to punish him because what he said hurt.”

Anthony looked at Victor.

Then back at Laurel.

His hand relaxed.

Victor’s smile faded.

Because Laurel had just demonstrated more control over Anthony than Victor believed possible.

Marcia watched too.

Her expression changed.

Not contempt now.

Understanding.

Then Laurel looked at her.

“You still chose what you did.”

Marcia lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

“No, you don't.”

Laurel’s voice remained steady.

“Victor manipulated you. That explains the trap.”

A pause.

“It doesn't explain why humiliating me felt natural to you.”

Marcia’s jaw tightened.

Laurel stepped closer.

“You hated me before he forged one email.”

Marcia said nothing.

That silence was honest.

Then the accountant entered again.

The external audit team had located the storage facility used by the legitimate replica program.

Nine original watches were still there.

Safe.

Two were missing.

Including the blue chronometer.

Victor looked away.

Anthony noticed.

One final sale had not gone through the companies already identified.

It had gone directly to a private lender.

Collateral for Victor’s personal debt.

May you like

And the lender had given Victor seventy-two hours to repay—

or the watch would disappear into an overseas collection.
