Chapter 14

The older records changed the history.

They did not clear Victor.

They complicated it.

Anthony’s father had authorized legitimate security replicas for six heirloom watches after a kidnapping threat.

Originals were moved into off-site vaults.

The gallery displayed replicas during public events.

Everything was documented privately.

Victor discovered the old system years later.

He used it as camouflage.

Some staff saw replica movements and assumed they were authorized because similar substitutions had happened before.

Anthony sat with the old files.

His father’s signature stared back at him.

Marcia stood across the room.

“You knew.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

Anthony’s eyes hardened.

“You could have told me tonight.”

“I thought those records were irrelevant.”

“No.”

His voice dropped.

“You thought information belonged to whoever decided it mattered.”

Marcia closed her eyes.

The same disease again.

Control through silence.

Laurel stood near the window.

Anthony looked toward her.

Their problem remained unresolved.

No audit could solve it.

No bodyguard could fix it.

No punishment could make her forget his word.

Continue.

He walked toward her.

She heard him.

Did not turn.

“I should have told you what I suspected.”

“Yes.”

“I should not have used your reaction to expose theirs.”

“Yes.”

Anthony’s breathing became heavier.

Apologies came harder to him than threats.

“I am sorry.”

Laurel finally turned.

Her eyes were wet but steady.

“I believe you.”

Hope moved briefly across his face.

Then she continued.

“That doesn't mean I'm ready to forgive you.”

Anthony nodded.

“I know.”

A long silence.

Laurel’s hand rested against the window frame.

“For years you told everyone that nobody humiliates your wife.”

Anthony swallowed.

“I know.”

“But tonight you decided a little humiliation might be useful.”

His eyes closed for half a second.

“Yes.”

She looked at him.

“That is the part I have to understand.”

Not Victor.

Not Marcia.

Anthony.

Could a man built around control learn not to use the people he loved as pieces on the board?

Before he could answer, the gallery doors opened.

Mia came running in with her caregiver.

She held something in both hands.

A small velvet watch box.

“Daddy.”

Anthony crouched.

“What is it?”

“I found it under Uncle Victor’s chair.”

Victor looked up sharply.

Everyone noticed.

Anthony opened the box.

Inside was not a watch.

It contained four folded receipts.

Cash payments.

Dates.

Names.

One name belonged to Peter.

One to Celia.

One to another relative.

The fourth receipt belonged to someone who had never raised a hand.

Someone who had remained silent through the entire confrontation.

Anthony slowly read the name.

Then looked across the room.

One of his own bodyguards lowered his eyes.
