Chapter 13

Marcia stopped defending herself after that.

Not completely.

Enough.

She admitted pressuring Victor to maintain old obligations regardless of Anthony’s restrictions.

She admitted signing blank approvals.

She admitted ignoring questions about where emergency cash came from.

And she admitted something Laurel had wanted to hear all night.

“I wanted you gone before Victor ever showed me those messages.”

Laurel looked at her.

Marcia’s eyes remained lowered.

“Why?”

Her voice was quieter now.

“Because Anthony changed after marrying you.”

Laurel’s jaw tightened.

Marcia continued.

“He listened before he acted.”

A bitter smile.

“He moved money into trusts. Closed rooms I thought should stay open. Asked lawyers questions my brothers would have handled privately.”

Anthony watched his aunt.

“You thought she made me weak.”

“Yes.”

Laurel’s hand slowly relaxed.

Marcia finally looked at her.

“And I hated that you came from nothing I respected.”

Laurel’s eyes hardened.

There it was.

Not a forged email.

Not Victor.

Her own prejudice.

Marcia breathed in.

“So when he showed me proof that you wanted me pushed out…”

“You believed it.”

“I wanted to.”

Laurel nodded.

That mattered more than an apology.

Truth first.

Forgiveness nowhere close.

Across the room, Victor remained silent.

Anthony looked at him.

“You're finished as capo.”

Victor’s mouth tightened.

“You don't have the votes.”

Anthony almost smiled.

“This isn't a vote.”

Victor stood.

Bodyguards moved.

He stopped.

“You remove me, half the old crews walk.”

Anthony’s voice remained calm.

“Then they walk.”

Marcia looked at him sharply.

“You're willing to lose that much power?”

Anthony turned.

“Yes.”

A long silence.

“That is the part none of you understood.”

Victor had expected Anthony to protect the structure.

Marcia had expected it.

The bribed relatives had expected it.

Anthony looked toward Laurel.

She finally met his eyes.

He continued.

“I would rather control less than become hostage to what I control.”

Victor’s face hardened.

That was the moment his last leverage disappeared.

The three bribed relatives were suspended from decision-making roles pending review.

Marcia voluntarily surrendered her financial authority.

Victor’s accounts and contracts were frozen.

Outside investigators received the full records.

No private punishment.

No hidden disappearance.

No loyal fixer.

Victor laughed bitterly.

“You're going to let strangers judge us.”

Anthony looked at him.

“No.”

His eyes stayed cold.

“I’m going to stop making sure they can't.”

Then Laurel’s phone vibrated.

She read the message.

Her expression changed.

Anthony noticed immediately.

“What?”

She looked at him.

The insurance investigators had discovered that one of the missing originals had been replaced long before Victor’s first theft.

Eleven years earlier.

Before Laurel.

Before Victor controlled gallery security.

Authorization carried the initials of Anthony’s late father.

The replica scheme had started inside the previous generation.
