Chapter 15

Claudia saw Noah again after eighteen months.

His request surprised everyone.

Why?

He remembered her pancakes.

Children are impossible.

Evelyn considered.

Mark considered.

I stayed out until asked.

They agreed to a short meeting in a public lodge café.

Claudia arrived nervous.

No gifts.

Good.

No dramatic apology.

No touch without Noah initiating.

Better.

Noah stared.

“You pushed me snow.”

Claudia swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She did not say because your father.

Did not say because your mother.

She said:

“Because I was angry about grown-up things and I took it out on you.”

Good.

“That wrong?”

“Yes.”

He thought.

Then:

“My plane okay.”

“Yes.”

“Grandpa has.”

“I know.”

Silence.

Then Noah asked:

“You make pancakes?”

Claudia cried.

Of course.

“Yes.”

They ate pancakes.

That did not restore her as stepmother.

It did not erase anything.

It was simply one safe hour.

Afterward, Claudia told Evelyn:

“Thank you.”

Evelyn answered:

“This wasn’t for you.”

Correct.

It was for Noah.

Adults often turn access into evidence of forgiveness.

Dangerous.

Noah wanted pancakes with a person he once loved.

That could exist beside memory of harm.

May you like

Complexity again.

I was learning to tolerate it.
