Chapter 6

I asked Evelyn why she did not come directly to me.

She laughed.

Not kindly.

“Richard Bellacorte?”

Fair.

“What did you think I would do?”

“Believe your son.”

That answer hurt because two years ago I probably would have.

Mark was my son.

Evelyn was the woman leaving him.

The family story formed before I ever asked her a question.

She knew that.

So she tried another route.

My late wife’s sister.

Old family friends.

House staff.

Letters.

Every message somehow returned to Mark.

Then Mark sent one response himself.

If Evelyn continued contacting the family, Noah would be moved overseas where she would never find him.

She believed him.

Why wouldn’t she?

He had already moved Noah once without telling her.

So Evelyn left Colorado.

Worked in Oregon.

Then Montana.

Saved money.

Waited.

Watched from afar through people she trusted.

Seven months ago she learned Mark planned to marry Claudia.

That mattered because Claudia had once been Evelyn’s friend.

The woman who held Noah during his first birthday.

The woman who later slept with Mark.

Evelyn came back.

Not to reclaim husband.

To make sure stepmother was not replacing mother by force.

“What did you find?”

She looked down.

“Claudia hates reminders that Noah existed before her.”

There.

Not the child himself exactly.

What he represented.

Mark’s first marriage.

Evelyn.

A life Claudia entered second.

At first Claudia overcompensated.

Expensive toys.

Matching outfits.

Photographs.

Then Noah began asking questions.

Where is Mommy?

Why don’t I remember?

Why does Miss Evie know my song?

Mark panicked.

Claudia became harsher.

They started punishing references to Evelyn.

No dessert.

No toys.

No warm clothes during “time-outs.”

Isolation.

Tonight escalated because the airplane made the secret portable.

If I saw Evelyn’s initials, the lie could no longer remain inside the house.

I looked at the woman across from me.

For two years she had been portrayed as the one who left a child.

In reality, she had been orbiting him from a distance because my family made proximity dangerous.

I said:

“Come with me.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Not yet.

Good.

Trust should not return because I finally learned the truth.

Then she asked:

“Can I see Noah tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

May you like

Her entire face changed.

That was enough for tonight.
