Chapter 7

Noah woke before sunrise.

Asked for the airplane.

Not his father.

Not Claudia.

The airplane.

I sat beside his bed and gave it back.

He hugged it.

Children make objects carry what adults cannot explain.

“Grandpa?”

“Yes.”

“Miss Evie bad?”

“No.”

He stared.

“Daddy says.”

“I know.”

“Claudia says she steals kids.”

My jaw tightened.

“She does not.”

He thought carefully.

“Then why secret?”

Good question.

Because adults are cowards.

Because power protects stories.

Because your father lied.

None belonged in a three-year-old’s breakfast.

“Because some grown-ups made mistakes.”

“Daddy?”

“Yes.”

He looked frightened.

“You mad?”

“Yes.”

“Daddy go away?”

There it was.

Children hear conflict and imagine disappearance.

“No one is making you choose who you love.”

His eyes filled.

That sentence mattered.

“You can love Daddy.”

A pause.

“Can love Miss Evie?”

“Yes.”

“Claudia?”

Harder.

“Yes.”

“If you want.”

He relaxed slightly.

Good.

Then:

“Can love you?”

I smiled despite everything.

“I insist.”

He laughed.

First time.

Later, Evelyn came to the lodge.

No dramatic reveal.

No crowd.

Just Noah in the library with me nearby.

She stopped at the doorway.

He stared.

“Miss Evie.”

She nodded.

“Hi, sweetheart.”

Then he looked at me.

Permission?

I nodded.

He ran to her.

Not because he knew she was his mother.

Because she was familiar and safe.

Evelyn hugged him.

Briefly.

Carefully.

Then sat on the floor.

They played with the airplane.

After twenty minutes Noah asked:

“Why you cry?”

Evelyn wiped her face.

“Happy.”

He accepted that.

Then:

“You know Mommy song.”

She froze.

I did too.

This was hers.

Not mine.

Evelyn looked at him.

“I know.”

“Why?”

Silence.

Then she said:

“Because I’m your mommy.”

No thunder.

No dramatic music.

Just truth.

Noah stared.

Then touched her face.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

He thought for several seconds.

Then climbed into her lap.

Children do not always need the elaborate explanations adults prepare.

Sometimes they only need the missing person to stop being missing.
