Chapter 11
Marcus resigned before Dante could remove him.
Not from the family.
Families were harder to resign from.
He resigned from every legitimate Caruso company and surrendered his capo authority.
The family council met without him.
Several men wanted Dante to handle Marcus privately.
Dante refused.
“My brother used evidence of financial misconduct to obtain business advantages.”
One older capo leaned forward.
“Then make him repay it.”
“That solves the money.”
“What else is there?”
Dante stared at him.
“My daughter.”
The room became quiet.
Marcus’s attorney arranged formal cooperation with investigators.
He turned over the invoice copies, his messages with Celeste, records of the business benefits he obtained, and the timeline of private meetings.
He did not receive immunity.
That mattered to Dante.
Cooperation was not erasure.
Celeste’s position became worse once Marcus admitted the extortion.
She could no longer plausibly claim the invoices were ordinary household mistakes.
Her own emails connected the shell vendors to Bellrose liabilities.
The forensic accountant traced much of the money.
Some paid old business creditors.
Some covered legal settlements Celeste had concealed before marrying Dante.
A smaller portion funded personal expenses she could not credibly tie to Ava.
Dante read every transaction.
He felt less rage than he expected.
Mostly embarrassment.
He had believed that because he understood violent men, nobody could deceive him with ordinary paperwork.
Celeste had.
For almost a year.
Not with an elaborate criminal scheme.
With invoices nobody bothered to question because they carried his daughter’s name and came from his wife.
Dante met with Ava’s trustee.
“I want independent administration permanently.”
The trustee looked surprised.
“You currently retain substantial approval rights.”
“I know.”
“You would be giving those up.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Dante looked through the conference-room glass toward the city.
“Because every adult around Ava keeps finding ways to turn access into power.”
He included himself in that sentence.
That was deliberate.
The new structure would require independent approval for unusual expenses until Ava became an adult.
No spouse.
No brother.
No capo.
No Dante.
Ava’s money would become boring.
