Chapter 12
Celeste finally explained why she started.
The explanation did not save her.
It did make her human.
Before marrying Dante, Bellrose Events had taken on a series of contracts that collapsed after a major client went bankrupt.
Celeste personally guaranteed several obligations.
She believed the company would recover.
Then she met Dante.
Their relationship moved quickly.
She was embarrassed by the debt and terrified that disclosing it would make him believe she wanted his money.
So she minimized it during the prenup negotiations.
That lie created the next one.
After marriage, creditors threatened litigation that would expose what she had hidden.
Celeste began routing money through fake vendors against Ava’s trust, telling herself she would replace every dollar after selling a remaining Bellrose asset.
The asset sold for less than expected.
The hole remained.
Then Marcus discovered it.
“I was trying to keep my marriage,” Celeste said during a meeting arranged through attorneys.
Dante looked at her.
“You used my daughter’s money to preserve my opinion of you.”
Celeste began crying.
“Yes.”
The honesty came too late to repair the marriage.
But it was still better than another excuse.
“What about the cufflinks?”
Her face tightened.
“Marcus kept threatening me.”
“That explains why you were afraid.”
“Yes.”
“It does not explain why you built fake evidence.”
“I needed something that could stop him.”
“You could have told me.”
She laughed bitterly.
“And say what? ‘Dante, I stole from Ava and now your brother is blackmailing me’?”
“Yes.”
“You would have destroyed me.”
Dante thought about the threat he made at dinner.
Only one of you sees tomorrow.
He could not honestly tell her she had no reason to fear his anger.
So he said something else.
“You were entitled to fear my reaction.”
Celeste looked surprised.
“You were not entitled to keep stealing.”
She lowered her eyes.
“And Marcus?”
“He answers for Marcus.”
Dante refused to let either wrong cancel the other.
Marcus’s extortion did not make Celeste’s fraud acceptable.
Celeste’s fraud did not make Marcus’s blackmail acceptable.
Fear explained.
Greed explained.
Shame explained.
None acquitted.
The divorce filing went forward.
Celeste moved permanently out of the estate.
Her contact with Ava became supervised while family court assessed what relationship, if any, remained appropriate.
