Chapter 20

Marcus attended family dinner again when Ava was eleven.

Not the old dining room.

That room no longer existed in the same form.

The smaller table seated eight.

No business papers.

No capos invited because of rank.

Marcus came because Dante invited his brother.

Ava approved beforehand.

Not because her approval controlled Dante’s family relationships.

Because Marcus’s presence affected her home.

He arrived without cufflinks.

Ava noticed.

Again.

“You can wear them.”

Marcus looked at Dante.

Ava rolled her eyes.

“I said.”

Marcus smiled.

“Next time.”

Dinner began awkwardly.

Dante and Marcus discussed baseball because both were afraid of meaningful subjects.

Ava finally said:

“You two weird.”

Mrs. Bennett, now working only part-time, nearly laughed into her napkin.

Marcus asked Ava about school.

She told him she hated history.

Dante became offended.

“You live inside history.”

“Exactly.”

Then Marcus made his mistake.

He reached across Ava to catch a glass she had knocked sideways.

His arm moved quickly.

Ava flinched.

Hard.

Everyone froze.

Marcus immediately pulled back.

“I’m sorry.”

The glass fell.

Water spread across the table.

Nobody moved for half a second.

Then Ava looked at the spilled water.

Her breathing changed.

Marcus remained completely still.

“Do you want me to leave?”

he asked.

Dante’s instinct was yes.

Ava answered first.

“No.”

Marcus waited.

“Don’t reach fast.”

“Okay.”

“That’s all.”

“Okay.”

Mrs. Bennett brought towels.

Ava cleaned the small section in front of herself.

Marcus cleaned his.

Dinner continued.

Later Dante found Ava sitting on the staircase.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“You flinched.”

“I know.”

“Do you want Marcus not come again?”

She looked irritated.

“No.”

“You sure?”

“Dad.”

He stopped.

“You ask like if scared means wrong.”

That sentence stayed with him.

He had spent years interpreting fear as information.

Correctly.

Fear mattered.

But fear did not always mean stop forever.

Sometimes it meant slow down.

Change behavior.

Ask.

Try again only if the person affected wanted to.

Marcus returned two months later.

This time wearing silver cufflinks.

Ava stared.

He noticed.

“Too much?”

She walked closer.

“Those same?”

“No.”

“Where old?”

“Evidence set was returned after the case. I gave it to my attorney to keep.”

“Why?”

Marcus hesitated.

“I didn’t want to throw it away just because it embarrassed me.”

Dante understood that.

He still kept the first loose cufflink downstairs.

Ava touched Marcus’s new cuff carefully.

“Pretty.”

Then sat.

The object had changed meaning again.

At three, it exposed fraud and blackmail.

At eleven, it was jewelry.

May you like

Not harmless because history disappeared.

Harmless because nobody needed to hide what it had once meant.
