Chapter 14

I changed household authority first.
Not criminal empire.
Home.
No family guest could direct staff medication handling.
No employment threat connected to family housing.
Any staff member could interrupt service if something looked wrong without being fired for disrespect.
Some older relatives laughed.
I removed one from dinner after he mocked the rule.
Laughter ended.
Mila transferred into guest-services management.
Her choice.
She no longer wore the maid uniform unless she wanted event duty.
One night she did.
I asked why.
“Tips are better.”
Fair.
Rose stopped allowing anyone else to prepare her medication without confirmation.
Not paranoia.
Routine.
She also started asking questions out loud.
A lot.
Too many.
Healthy.
Elias refused every family role I offered.
So I stopped offering.
That was important.
Respecting “no” is harder than respecting “yes.”
He visited once every few months.
Sometimes stayed twenty minutes.
Sometimes two days.
No announcement.
No title.
At one dinner, an old captain asked:
“So which brother outranks which?”
Elias laughed.
I did not.
“Neither.”
The captain looked confused.
Good.
