Chapter 8

Rose blamed herself.

She waited until we were alone.

“I knew Elias existed.”

Of course.

Another truth.

“How long?”

“Since before you were born.”

I laughed once.

Not because funny.

Because apparently I was the only Blackwell raised inside carefully measured ignorance.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

She looked old suddenly.

Not seventy-two.

Older.

“Your father asked me not to.”

There.

Again.

Family loyalty used as silence.

Alexander feared I would feel displaced.

He feared Elias would resent me.

So he kept both sons separate.

He financed Elias.

Visited.

Loved him privately.

But never gave either of us the chance to define the relationship ourselves.

Cowardice disguised as protection.

Then Rose said something worse.

“I met Elias twice.”

I stared.

“As a child?”

“No.”

“As an adult?”

She nodded.

Once after my father collapsed.

Elias begged her to tell me.

Rose refused.

Why?

Nathan had already convinced her Elias wanted to use the crisis to enter the family publicly.

She believed him.

For two days.

Then doubted.

Before she could change course, Elias disappeared.

My mother had lived five years with that uncertainty.

Said nothing.

“What did you think happened?”

“That he left.”

“And now?”

She looked at the empty lake-house room.

“I think we made leaving his only safe choice.”

That mattered.

Not abducted forever.

Not necessarily dead.

Driven out by a family that refused to see him except as political risk.

I asked:

“Do you want me to find him?”

Rose looked surprised.

Then understood.

My brother’s life was not an object for us to recover.

If he wanted distance, that mattered.

But I needed to know he was alive.

That much.

Rafe began discreetly.

No public search.

No family announcement.

No hunt.

Just traces.

Elias Blackwell.

Elias Bell.

May you like

Maybe another name entirely.

For the first time, I hoped my brother had become very good at disappearing.
