Chapter 2

The harsh, scraping sound of the metal dog bowl against the marble floor echoed through the dining hall, cutting through the sophisticated chatter like a serrated blade. The family members and heavily armed bodyguards standing along the perimeter froze in their tracks. The bright, cinematic lighting seemed to catch every terrible detail of the scene: the weeping three-year-old girl in her elegant cardigan kneeling on the floor, and the older woman sneering down at her with absolute disdain.

"Aunt Bianca, what are you doing?" whispered one of the younger associates, his voice trembling slightly.

"I am teaching this spoiled brat her place in the hierarchy," Bianca snapped back, adjusting the heavy rings on her fingers. "She walks around this estate like she owns it. She needs to learn respect."

Before anyone else could utter a single word of protest, the heavy, soundproofed double doors leading to the adjoining Mafia council room swung open. The hinges were silent, but the sudden shift in the room's air pressure was palpable.

Alessandro Vitale stepped into the dining hall.

At thirty-six years old, the head of the Vitale family was a vision of deeply masculine, terrifying power. He was undeniably handsome, possessing the rugged, commanding presence of a classic movie star, but it was hardened by the brutal reality of his life. He had thick, neatly styled dark hair, an angular face, a sharply defined jawline, and a short, well-trimmed full beard that perfectly framed his fair, rosy skin. His cold, sharp, intimidating eyes swept the room in a fraction of a second. He wore a tailored dark dress shirt with the collar unbuttoned, exposing the elegant, intricate tattoos creeping up his neck. The sleeves were rolled up slightly, revealing more ink on his muscular forearms, giving him an incredibly dangerous, yet sophisticated aura.

He had been discussing the hostile takeover of the southern shipping ports, but all syndicate business evaporated from his mind the moment he crossed the threshold.

Alessandro stopped dead in his tracks.

His piercing gaze locked onto the horrific scene. His three-year-old daughter was kneeling on the cold marble floor beside a metal dog bowl, while his own family sat around the table, continuing to eat their expensive meals as if nothing were happening.

Sophie looked up, her fair cheeks stained with hot tears. Her lower lip quivered violently when she saw her father standing in the doorway.

"Daddy," Sophie cried, her tiny, breathless American accent slicing through the heavy, suffocating silence of the room. She pointed a trembling finger at the mess on the floor. "She gave my dinner to the dog. She said I have to eat this."

The temperature in the bright, luminous room plummeted to absolute zero. The capos at the table stopped chewing. The bodyguards standing by the walls stiffened, their hands drifting instinctively toward the concealed weapons inside their dark suits. Everyone recognized the lethal, apocalyptic stillness that had just overtaken the Don of the Vitale family.
