Chapter 10 - THE FIRST TIME PRESTON BLOCKED THE DOOR
Rocco’s entire body changed.
Audrey saw it.
She lifted one hand.
“No.”
He stopped.
Not because the anger disappeared.
Because she had asked.
Audrey turned toward Preston.
“Tell him.”
Preston looked at Rocco.
Then back at Audrey.
“It happened once.”
Audrey’s voice sharpened.
“Tell it correctly.”
Preston swallowed.
Four months earlier, Audrey and Preston argued after dinner at the Reed house.
Marian made a comment about Audrey spending too much time with Rocco.
Audrey replied that marriage had not erased her father.
Preston told her not to disrespect his mother.
Audrey decided to leave.
Preston stood in front of the door.
She told him to move.
He did not.
Then she tried to walk around him.
He caught both her arms.
Not hard enough to bruise.
Hard enough to stop her.
Audrey looked directly at Rocco.
“I was already pregnant.”
Rocco stared at Preston.
Preston said:
“I let go.”
Audrey nodded.
“When I started crying.”
Silence.
Preston apologized that night.
He promised it would never happen again.
Audrey believed him.
Then at the reception he grabbed her arm in front of everyone.
Same instinct.
Different room.
Rocco wanted to hit him.
It was visible.
Audrey saw.
“So did Mom.”
Rocco looked at her.
“What?”
Audrey remembered a conversation with Elena from years earlier.
She had been nineteen.
A Moretti cousin physically blocked his girlfriend from leaving an argument.
Rocco threw the cousin out of the house.
Later Elena told Audrey:
“Your father was right to stop him.”
Then she added:
“But watch what men like your father do next.”
Audrey did not understand then.
Elena explained.
Sometimes powerful men correctly punish another man for controlling a woman.
Then immediately decide what the woman should do afterward.
Leave him.
Forgive him.
Move home.
Never speak to him.
Always speak to him.
“The control changes hands.”
Audrey looked at her father.
Rocco absorbed it.
Then he sat.
That was the best answer he had.
Preston looked toward Audrey.
“I don’t expect you to come back.”
“Good.”
“I want to change.”
“That’s your problem.”
He flinched.
Audrey continued.
“If you change because I promise to return, then you’re still making my decision responsible for your behavior.”
Preston nodded.
He understood.
Or began to.
Then Gary called.
Rocco answered.
His expression changed during the conversation.
“What?”
Gary spoke for nearly a minute.
Then Rocco looked toward Preston.
“Your mother is coming.”
Preston closed his eyes.
Audrey frowned.
“Marian?”
Rocco nodded.
Gary had just learned Marian was already on the road.
Brenda had confronted her by phone.
Marian refused to answer questions.
Then she said she would settle everything in person.
Preston stood.
“She should not come here.”
Audrey almost laughed.
“Interesting.”
He looked at her.
“You finally understand unwanted family visits.”
Preston sat again.
Two hours later, Marian Reed arrived.
Seventy years old.
Perfectly dressed.
Silver hair.
No visible fear.
She walked into Rocco Moretti’s house as though she still believed age gave her authority.
Then she saw Audrey.
Her eyes dropped to the pregnancy.
And the first thing she said was not an apology.
“You should never have married into a family you planned to leave.”
Rocco stood.
Audrey stood faster.
“No.”
Her father looked at her.
Audrey faced Marian herself.

“I warned Brenda weeks ago that this baby would destroy my son.”
