Chapter 4 - LILY VALE

Brenda sat down.
Her anger disappeared.
For several minutes she looked like someone had removed every structure holding her upright.
Audrey watched her.
This was the woman who had attacked her.
The woman who threatened her unborn child.
Nothing about the new truth erased that.
But Audrey could also see the eighteen-year-old Brenda buried somewhere inside the thirty-five-year-old woman.
A mother told her baby died.
A daughter taught that obedience was survival.
A sister betrayed by both brothers.
Rocco looked toward Preston.
“You told a child her mother abandoned her.”
Preston’s jaw tightened.
“I was trying to keep the two lives separate.”
“Why?”
“Because Mom said if Brenda found out—”
Rocco cut him off.
“You were thirty-eight three months ago.”
Preston went silent.
Good.
No childhood excuse.
Gary moved toward the windows.
Then he said:
“She knows now.”
Everyone turned.
Preston’s face changed.
“What?”
Gary looked toward Brenda.
“I found her six months ago.”
Brenda slowly stood.
“Found who?”
Gary swallowed.
“Your daughter.”
Preston moved toward him.
“What did you tell her?”
“The truth.”
Preston’s face hardened.
“You had no right.”
Rocco laughed once.
Every head turned.
“You people love that sentence.”
Preston stopped.
Gary explained.
He had carried guilt for years.
Then Daniel Vale died.
Gary attended the funeral secretly.
Rachel was there.
So was Brenda’s daughter.
Lily.
Seventeen years old.
She had Brenda’s eyes.
Gary knew immediately.
He spoke to Rachel later.
Rachel finally told Lily where she came from.
Not every detail.
Enough.
“She knows you didn’t abandon her,” Gary told Brenda.
Brenda covered her mouth.
Audrey looked away.
The room suddenly felt too private.
Then Brenda asked:
“Does she hate me?”
Gary shook his head.
“She doesn’t know you.”
That hurt differently.
“She wants to.”
Brenda looked at him.
Gary nodded.
“She’s been trying to decide whether meeting you would make things better or worse.”
Preston spoke.
“Where is she?”
Gary ignored him.
Rocco understood first.
“She’s close.”
Gary nodded.
Brenda’s eyes widened.
“How close?”
The ballroom doors opened.
Everyone turned.
A teenage girl stood in the doorway.
Dark blond hair.
Plain black dress.
No jewelry.
She looked terrified.
Yet she remained.
Brenda stopped breathing.
Gary moved slightly toward her.
“Lily.”
The girl’s eyes never left Brenda.
Brenda took one step.
Then stopped herself.
That mattered.
She did not rush.
Did not claim.
Did not demand.
“Hi.”
Her voice broke.
Lily looked at her.
“Hi.”
Nobody moved.
Then Lily’s gaze shifted.
Past Brenda.
Toward Preston.
The fear in her face became anger.
“You.”
Preston went still.
Lily stepped into the ballroom.
“You told me she didn’t want me.”
Preston tried to answer.
Lily did not let him.
“You came every birthday.”
Brenda looked at Preston.
Lily continued.
“You brought gifts.”
Another step.
“You told me my mother had a new life and I would only hurt her if I went looking.”
Preston’s face drained.
Brenda whispered:
“You made my daughter afraid to find me.”
Lily looked back at Brenda.
Then she delivered the truth neither woman expected.
“I did find you once.”
Brenda froze.
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
Lily’s eyes filled.
“I stood outside the Reed house.”
A pause.
“You were on the front steps.”
Brenda stared.
May you like
Lily continued.
“You looked right at me.”
