Chapter 5 - THE GIRL AT THE GATE

Brenda remembered.

A rainy afternoon.

A teenage girl across the street.

Red jacket.

Hands buried inside the pockets.

Brenda had noticed her because she stood there too long.

Preston came outside minutes later.

He told Brenda the girl was waiting for a ride.

Then he walked across the street.

Brenda went inside.

She never thought about it again.

Until now.

“That was you.”

Lily nodded.

“What did he say?”

Lily looked toward Preston.

“He asked why I came.”

Brenda turned.

Preston’s face had gone still.

Lily continued.

“I said I wanted to see you.”

Preston told her Brenda had rebuilt her life.

That Brenda became angry whenever anyone mentioned the baby.

That showing up would reopen something Brenda wanted buried.

Lily believed him.

She left.

Brenda stared at Preston.

“You stood between us.”

“I thought I was protecting—”

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

Brenda looked toward Audrey.

For the first time since the attack, real shame entered her face.

“I sounded like him.”

Audrey said nothing.

Brenda looked toward Lily again.

“I don’t know what to say.”

Lily nodded.

“That’s okay.”

“I thought you were dead.”

“I know.”

“I would have looked.”

“I know.”

Brenda began crying.

Lily did not immediately hug her.

Good.

She had spent seventeen years without this woman.

Blood did not create instant intimacy.

Then Lily asked:

“Why did you hurt her?”

She pointed toward Audrey.

Brenda looked down.

No excuse survived.

“I was angry.”

“At her?”

“No.”

Lily waited.

Brenda swallowed.

“At everything she had.”

Audrey’s eyes narrowed.

Brenda forced herself to continue.

Audrey was pregnant.

Celebrated.

Protected by Rocco.

Allowed to complain when tired.

Allowed to decide how the nursery would look.

Allowed to say no to family guests.

Every normal freedom became a mirror.

Brenda had lost her child because the Reed family decided motherhood belonged to them more than it belonged to her.

Then she watched Audrey receive what she had been denied.

She hated herself for resenting it.

So she turned the resentment toward Audrey.

Lily listened.

Then said:

“That still doesn’t explain why you tried to hurt the baby.”

Brenda closed her eyes.

“No.”

Audrey looked toward Preston.

Because Brenda had already said there was more.

Preston knew it too.

Rocco waited.

Finally Brenda spoke.

“Preston told me Audrey was leaving him.”

Audrey’s face changed.

“He said she planned to take the baby and make sure the Reeds barely saw her.”

Preston stepped forward.

“I said she was talking about leaving.”

“You said more.”

Brenda’s voice sharpened.

“You said if Audrey walked away with a Moretti daughter, then Mom had been right about women tearing families apart.”

Gary stared at Preston.

Rocco’s expression darkened.

Audrey looked at her husband.

“You said that?”

Preston tried to explain.

“I was angry.”

Audrey laughed softly.

A terrible little laugh.

“So was Brenda.”

Preston stopped.

Brenda continued.

He told her Audrey had been filling boxes.

He told her Rocco would help Audrey disappear into the Moretti estate.

He told Brenda history was repeating.

Another woman taking a daughter away from the Reeds.

Brenda knew that was not the same as her story.

But trauma does not need perfect logic when someone feeds it the right words.

Rocco looked at Preston.

“Why were you trying to make your sister afraid?”

Preston said nothing.

Audrey answered.

“Because I really was leaving.”

Everyone turned.

Preston closed his eyes.

Audrey looked at her father.

“I was going to tell you tonight.”

Rocco stared.

May you like

Audrey touched her belly.

“Before Brenda touched me, I had already decided my marriage was over.”
