Chapter 12

Bianca brought Mason to see Caleb two days later.

I almost refused.

Caleb surprised me.

He wanted to see him.

Only with me there.

That was the condition.

Mason entered carrying nothing.

No gift.

No apology letter written by an adult.

Good.

He stood near the door.

Caleb stayed beside me on the sofa.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Mason said:

“I’m sorry.”

Caleb looked at him.

“For hitting?”

“Yes.”

“And tying?”

Mason swallowed.

“Grandma tied you.”

“You pushed the chair.”

“Yes.”

Caleb thought about that.

Then asked:

“Why?”

Mason’s eyes filled.

“Because I thought if I stopped, everybody would think I was weak.”

Caleb frowned.

“I was weak.”

That sentence hit every adult in the room.

Mason shook his head.

“No.”

“Yes. I couldn’t breathe.”

He said it simply.

No shame.

No philosophy.

Just fact.

Mason looked confused.

Caleb continued.

“Mom helped.”

I felt something tighten in my chest.

To Caleb, weakness had not become identity yet.

It was a moment.

A body struggling.

Help arriving.

Done.

That was what we needed to protect.

Mason looked at me.

“Grandma said if you need help, people take your place.”

I answered.

“She is wrong.”

Caleb looked at him.

“My mom helps me and she’s still boss.”

Bianca covered her mouth.

I almost laughed.

Four years old.

Argument finished.

Mason sat down carefully on the other side of the sofa.

Not close.

Not far.

Caleb looked at him.

“You can play dinosaurs.”

Mason nodded.

“Okay.”

No forgiveness speech.

May you like

No forced hug.

Just two children being allowed to become children again without adults turning every interaction into succession.
