Chapter 14

My mother came to see me after nine days.
Alone.
No pearls.
No formal dinner clothes.
Just Francesca.
That itself was unusual.
“I want to see the boys.”
“No.”
Her face hardened.
“I am their grandmother.”
“Yes.”
“Then you cannot cut me out forever.”
“I didn’t say forever.”
Silence.
“What do you want?”
There it was.
Still transactional.
I looked at her.
“I want you to understand what you did.”
“I was trying to make them strong.”
“No.”
“I raised you.”
“That does not make everything you did correct.”
Her jaw tightened.
“Your father agreed with me for years.”
“Yes.”
That surprised her.
I continued.
“He was wrong too.”
Silence.
Francesca looked away.
Then, unexpectedly, she said:
“My father did worse.”
I said nothing.
She continued.
“He made my brothers fight until one bled.”
There it was.
Another generation.
Another justification waiting to become inheritance.
“I thought what I did was gentler.”
I felt something in me soften.
Not enough to erase consequence.
Enough to understand.
“Gentler is not good.”
Her eyes filled.
That was new.
“I did not think Caleb would stop breathing.”
“No.”
“But you tied him.”
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
First admission.
No excuse attached.
That mattered.
“I thought if he learned early…”
She stopped.
“Learned what?”
Her voice broke.
“That nobody protects you forever.”
I looked at her.
“That is what you wanted children to know?”
She said nothing.
I thought of Caleb reaching for me.
Mason afraid of losing.
Bianca hating me.
My mother believing all of it was preparation.
“You taught them the wrong lesson.”
She looked up.
“What should it be?”
I answered carefully.
May you like
“That the right people do protect you.”
And for the first time, she had nothing to argue with.
