Chapter 1

Dario ended the engagement dinner before anyone touched dessert.

Camilla was escorted to the east sitting room.

Preston went to a separate office with a bodyguard outside.

Neither was questioned.

Not yet.

Dario carried Elsie upstairs.

Without the brace, she could put some weight on her left leg, but not safely for long.

Two years earlier, Elsie had survived the car crash that killed her mother, Elena Ravello.

The injury had damaged nerves and muscles around her lower leg.

Months of therapy had helped.

The brace remained medically necessary.

Camilla knew that.

Which made her accusation worse.

Dr. Rebecca Morris, Elsie’s pediatric orthopedist, arrived within the hour after Dario called.

She examined the leg.

No new fracture.

No serious damage from the fall.

But the skin around Elsie’s ankle was irritated where the brace had been torn away.

“She needs the brace tonight?”

“Not this one.”

Dr. Morris examined the damaged straps.

“I’ll fit a temporary support.”

Dario remained beside Elsie.

She had stopped crying.

Now she was watching the gold ring in his hand.

“Mommy’s?”

“Yes.”

“You know?”

“Yes.”

The ring had a tiny engraving inside.

E + D — Always Home

Dario had ordered it himself eleven years earlier.

After Elena died, he had been told the ring was missing after the crash.

Police did not find it inside the vehicle.

The hospital did not return it with Elena’s belongings.

Dario eventually stopped asking.

For two years, he assumed it had disappeared somewhere between twisted metal, paramedics, and an emergency room.

Now it had come out of Camilla’s dresser.

“How did you find it?” he asked.

Elsie looked toward the hallway.

Dario immediately softened his voice.

“You’re not in trouble.”

“I wanted my blue ribbon.”

“What ribbon?”

“For my brace.”

Camilla sometimes kept spare ribbons and decorative brace covers in a bedroom drawer because she claimed Elsie’s medical equipment looked ugly at formal events.

Dario had hated that comment when he first heard it.

He hated it more now.

Elsie had opened the drawer looking for a ribbon.

She found the ring inside a velvet jewelry pouch.

She recognized it from photographs of Elena.

“So you put it in your brace pouch?”

Elsie nodded.

“Why?”

“Camilla came back.”

Dario became still.

“You were scared she’d take it?”

Another nod.

That was enough.

He kissed the top of her head.

“You did the right thing bringing it to me.”

His attorney, Julia Mercer, arrived shortly afterward.

She found Dario in the hallway.

“Camilla has already called counsel.”

“Good.”

“Preston too.”

“Better.”

Julia looked toward Elsie’s room.

“What happened?”

Dario opened his palm.

She stared at the ring.

“I thought that was lost.”

“So did I.”

Julia’s expression changed.

“Do not confront either of them alone.”

Dario looked at her.

“My dead wife’s ring was in my fiancée’s drawer.”

“I heard myself.”

“Preston tried to take it.”

“I heard that too.”

“And Camilla ripped off my daughter’s medical brace.”

Julia held his gaze.

“That is exactly why I am telling you not to go downstairs angry.”

Dario looked at the ring again.

Then asked the question that mattered.

“Who had Elena’s personal effects after the crash?”

Julia hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

“Find out.”

Dario had believed the mystery that night was simple.

Why Camilla possessed the ring.

By midnight, Julia called him back.

It was not simple at all.

The hospital record showed that Elena’s wedding ring had not been lost at the crash scene.

Someone had removed it after Elena arrived alive.
