Chapter 6

Camilla’s attorney finally answered the ring question.
According to the letter, Elena voluntarily gave Camilla the ring.
Camilla kept it because she was “overwhelmed by grief and uncertainty about the proper time to return it.”
Julia read the sentence without expression.
Dario stared at her.
“Two years?”
“Yes.”
“In a dresser drawer?”
“Yes.”
“While accepting my engagement ring?”
Julia closed the letter.
“Morally grotesque is not the same as evidentiary explanation.”
Dario looked away.
Camilla also claimed she had never concealed information about the crash.
That assertion lasted six hours.
The hospital records showed Camilla personally signed a short insurance liaison form the morning after Elena died.
She listed herself as:
Family representative for immediate claim coordination.
Dario barely remembered authorizing it.
He had been in the pediatric ICU with Elsie.
Camilla offered to handle paperwork.
Preston was already communicating with Ravello Fleet.
The insurer requested a standard question:
Any known mechanical concerns before incident?
The answer submitted:
None known.
Camilla signed beneath it.
Dario stared at the page.
“She knew Elena had said something about the car.”
Julia cautioned him.
“We only know Nurse Greer remembers hearing the word car.”
“She knew Preston.”
“Yes.”
“She was at the hospital before me.”
“Yes.”
“She signed a no-known-defect statement.”
“Yes.”
“And the SUV had a documented brake fault.”
“Yes.”
Julia leaned forward.
“We need evidence she knew about that fault.”
They found it the next day.
Elena’s old phone backup still existed in cloud storage controlled by the estate.
Dario had never opened it after her death.
He authorized forensic review.
A text from Elena to Camilla appeared three days before the crash.
That stupid brake warning came back. Preston’s shop says it’s fine. I don’t believe them.
Camilla replied:
I’ll ask Preston tonight. Don’t make yourself crazy.
Dario read the exchange.
Third clue.
Camilla knew Elena distrusted the repair.
She knew Preston was involved.
And after Elena crashed, Camilla signed an insurance statement saying no mechanical concern was known.
Dario asked Julia:
“Why?”
Julia shook her head.
“We’re close.”
“To what?”
May you like
“Knowing what they were protecting.”
The answer would require opening Ravello Fleet Services itself.
