Chapter 14
Dario rebuilt Ravello Fleet Services before deciding whether to keep it.
The old executive override system ended.
No business manager could return a vehicle to service against a technician’s safety hold.
Only an independent certified safety officer could clear the hold.
Parts shortages became visible on board reports instead of disappearing inside performance numbers.
Technicians received protected reporting channels.
Executive bonuses could no longer reward lower maintenance costs without equal weight for safety metrics and defect recurrence.
Several relatives complained that mechanics now had more power than executives.
Dario answered:
“Over brakes? Yes.”
The company survived.
Smaller.
More expensive to operate.
More honest.
Dario also accepted his own piece.
He had signed risk reports based on numbers he never examined closely.
He had praised Preston’s savings.
He had told Elena not to worry because “the fleet people handled it.”
No law accused Dario of causing her death.
That did not erase his regret.
He began meeting with a therapist recommended by Julia.
Not because a court required it.
Because anger had become the only emotion he trusted himself to express publicly.
The first three sessions irritated him.
He kept going.
Elsie’s recovery mattered more.
Dr. Morris fitted a new brace.
This time Elsie chose the design.
Dark blue straps.
Tiny silver stars.
No decorative pouch.
Dario showed her a small velvet box instead.
Inside was Elena’s wedding ring.
Elsie stared.
“Mine?”
“Someday.”
“Why not now?”
“Because you’re four.”
She frowned.
“That’s rude.”
Dario laughed for the first time in days.
He closed the box.
“This stays somewhere safe until you’re older.”
“Not Camilla drawer.”
“No.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
Elsie touched the box.
Then her brace.
“Mommy gave ring to you?”
Dario took a breath.
“She tried to.”
Elsie looked confused.
He did not burden her with the rest.
“She wanted me to have it. And one day, if you want it, it will be yours.”
May you like
That answer was enough for now.
The ring finally reached the family Elena had meant it for.
