Chapter 1

The afternoon sun beat down on the sprawling Chicago estate, casting long, sharp shadows across the pristine stone pathways of the memorial garden. It was a sanctuary of life built to honor the dead, filled with the vibrant colors of blooming hydrangeas, rolling wooden flower racks, and ceramic planters overflowing with trailing vines. Beside the ornamental reflecting pond, four-year-old Ruby Ventresca knelt in the dirt. Her simple garden dress was smudged with soil, and her oversized gardening gloves clutched a fragile, purple flowering plant. She was humming a quiet, off-key lullaby, oblivious to the predatory shadow falling over her.
Claudia Ventresca stood over the child, her elegant garden-party outfit looking entirely out of place amidst the soil and fertilizer. Her manicured fingers, heavy with expensive gold rings, twitched with barely contained rage.
"What do you think you are doing?" Claudia hissed, her voice slicing through the tranquil bubbling of the reflecting pond.
Ruby looked up, her fair, rosy cheeks flushing with a mixture of confusion and fear. "I'm planting them for Mommy. She liked the purple ones best."
"Give it to me," Claudia demanded. Without waiting for an answer, she lunged forward. Her hands violently ripped the flowering plant from Ruby’s small grip, snapping the delicate stems. With a disgusted scoff, Claudia hurled the ruined flowers directly into the center of the reflecting pond.
"No!" Ruby cried out. She immediately scrambled toward the water’s edge, her small hands reaching out desperately over the stone lip toward the floating, fractured plant.
Claudia’s eyes darkened with a vicious, unhinged malice. She stepped behind the four-year-old, grabbed Ruby by both shoulders, and forcefully shoved the child’s face down into the freezing water of the pond.
Ruby thrashed wildly, her small flats kicking against the stone, her muffled cries sending bubbles bursting to the surface. Claudia did not flinch, ignoring the frantic struggling of the little girl beneath her hands.
"Your mother is dead," Claudia said, smiling viciously as she leaned her weight into the child's shoulders. "Her garden should disappear with her. You should both be forgotten."
"Let her go, Claudia!" a small, terrified voice shouted from the pathway. Twelve-year-old Evelyn, Claudia's own daughter, stood frozen in her summer dress, her hands clamped over her mouth in absolute horror.
Claudia ignored her daughter, her grip tightening on Ruby. "Shut up, Evelyn. This is how we prune the weak branches from this family."
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the adjoining greenhouse burst open, the hinges screaming in protest. Alessio Ventresca stepped out into the sunlight. He was a man who commanded gravity, powerful and deeply masculine, wearing a tailored dark three-piece suit that seemed to absorb the light. His eyes locked onto the pond.
In a fraction of a second, Alessio crossed the stone terrace. He didn't speak. He simply seized Claudia by the back of her elegant dress and tore her away from the water with the effortless, terrifying strength of a veteran Mafia boss. He threw her aside like a discarded rag and dropped to his knees, pulling Ruby safely against his broad chest.
Ruby gasped for air, coughing violently as water streamed from her fair face onto Alessio’s crisp dress shirt. She clung to his lapels, her small body trembling uncontrollably.
"I've got you, piccola mia," Alessio murmured, his voice a low, soothing rumble as he shielded her. "You're safe."
May you like
Ruby sobbed, turning her wet face away from the pond. She pointed a shaking, gloved finger toward the terrace behind Claudia. "Daddy… But those are Mom’s favorite flowers."
Alessio looked up. Several of the large stone flower beds—the ones his late wife had painstakingly cultivated—had been brutally uprooted and destroyed, the soil turned over and trampled.
